Hi All

Iam looking for a diagnostic tool to do a scan on my car, lately the temp gauge is not working and the engine light been coming on and off!. my mechanic said he put a second hand cluster in and reprogrammed it but same problem so i am taking matters into my own hands...

can you recommend a proper tool? this is what i found so far

the car is not overheating and the engine works fine.. I am taking it in for a full inspection just to be on the safe side!

For something basic use a Bluetooth one with Torques app.
However VagCom will always be the daddy.

Could it be that both the ECU and dashboard temperature feeds from the coolant temp sensor have gone wrong? As both are read from different circuits in the same sensor they can fail independently, but in this case it sounds like both have gone. For that matter, could it be something as simple as the sensor connector into the loom coming (partially) unclipped so that neither circuit is connected at all on an intermittent basis? A quick and easy suggestion would be to try manipulating the cable going into the coolant sensor and seeing if this has an effect on either measurement.

vagcom is the best solution and very cheap for the free version, cable under a fiver on ebay and software is free to download from rostech web site
save yourself a world of pain and install it on to at best a Windows 7 laptop, better still windows XP. I dug out an old laptop, installed Win XP on it and don't use it for anything else other than car diagnostics.
second hand laptops of that age are sat in cupboards never used and so are very cheap, does not matter if the battery is knackered as it can always be used on mains power.
An alternative is VW Tools that I got as a software package with a VAG Commander cable off ebay for around £10. It looks like vagcom but does not have any of the limitations of the free version of vagcom, however I have only been able to use the engine module of VW Tools

Cheers,

No problem using Windows 10 with Vdsc or even the very old versions of vagcom
