A2 Door Cracking

Let me look into these developments and get the full story from Audi UK.

Cheers,

Mike

My Audi dealer made contact with Audi UK within the last 4 weeks to be told that cracked doors would no longer be repaired under warranty. Is this the actual situation or like so many other cases in this thread can Audi be kick started into fixing a door?

Hi Mike,

I bought a radio from Phil and he told me that both of my front doors need replacing, they are cracking. He mentioned there was a notice from Audi UK about this and to print that out and take it when I go to see them about the doors. I've had a look on the forum, but there there are such a lot of post on this subject that I'm struggling to find it! Please could you send me a link. Hopefully I'll be able to get it sorted without too much trouble...

Thanks ever so much
Sonia

Hi Sonia,

Firstly, your doors do NOT need replacement - at most, you'll require a repair to the upper hinge area.

Rather than go in with all guns blazing, approach your local dealership about the cracks. Point out that you know there is a problem with this issue and that you'd like them assessed and a repair making if possible. A lot of dealerships are insisting on some service history now, which is hardly surprising, as the door cracks, although unsightly, are not unsafe or in any way detrimental to the performance of your A2.

See what the dealership says and then take it from there.

Cheers,

Mike

Yes i think Sonia miss heard me when i said about the doors . I did show her my door hinge's and i think i did say that they bond a piece around the door hinge area . Not been on my computer properly since last weekend so was unable to search through the thread to give you the full info . Glad the stereo worked in the end and you can now entertain the little one's ;)

Cheers Phil

Typically the Dealerships show no interest now. The problem I feel is cosmetic, I have never even seen a misaligned door resulting from this let alone one in dangger if falling off. If I recall correctly the 'fix' is primarily a strengthening of the check straps attachement to door and just a cosmetic covering to the cracks around the hinge area.

Interesting to know what response you get.

Ok, my drivers door has definitely dropped so I expect that the hinge pin is worn also.

It has the 'click' of the metal pieces moving against each other when you first open it. I'll check the passenger side.

I'm booked in with Audi Cheltenham in January so we'll see what they say!

Check the tightness of the huinge bolts first.

Many A2s have had loose hinge bolts (normally the ones on the door itself).

Just try holding the door partially open and then try lifting it by the external handle, you will probably see it moving if the bolts are loose.

I've searched but unsuccessfully for photos of the cracked area around the door hinge.

My drivers door moves quite a lot and I'd be interested to see what other A2s were suffering in this area to compare... also I'd be very interested in the 'fix' that Audi offer.

Please could someone post some photos?

Thanks

I have seen pics of the modification. The only thing visible is a rubber gasket that covers the cracks. The structural change is internal to the door skin where the check strap attaches to the door, preventing strain ever getting to the hinge. (though later cars were fitted with a modified hinge).
I did have a file showing the mod but as I have dismissed it as a cosmetic issue (providing check straps are good) I have misplaced it.

Here is my door... It's pretty bad and the door catches the wing when it is opened.

If Audi say no, I'll replace the door.

Update.

Audi Cheltenham looked and said... yes it's cracked but Audi won't cover it due to age (out of body warranty now).

I spoke to the technician who inspected it and he was very helpful giving me part numbers etc of the kit required from Audi to repair it.

I've ordered the parts from TPS (£25-40 total I think) and will fit them myself.

Audi Cheltenham also cleaned it thoroughly inside and out without charge... very decent of them. :)

Even the newest A2 will now be outside the 12 year anti-corrosion/perforation warranty, so this is about the best outcome you could have hoped for sadly. I'm pleased that you've got the parts though - so much is getting NLA (no longer attainable) with Audi/TPS now.

my 2001 A2 TDI has just very recently started making a "cracking" noise 2 to 3 in succession as i open the driver's side door...

this is a completely different "cracking" that what you guys are talking about? or does the crack in the metal make your door make a cracking sound when you open it too?

Yours sounds like the common door strap problem. Contact Depronman, he does a great fix for this.

I think what you've describing is an audible cracking noise, which is different to the physical cracking of the metal around the hinge points on the front doors of our A2s. Your noise will be caused by the door check strap, which is well documented on A2OC and is a relatively easy and cheap repair.
