hi all I'm new on here, have been reading some threads and have quickly realised that this is the forum to be on to get correct info, could you please help me????

I have an audi a2 s-line that I like very much however the inevitable has just happened, the gearbox started making grinding noises and it has now got 3 rather large holes in it, my question/sos is what gearbox/code will fit my car that's an audi a2 s-line 2004 gearbox code GRJ please? I have heard possibly a vw polo box?
I'm so lost with this its untrue....

many thanks in advance and I would be really greatfull for help

Is your car a petrol or a diesel? 1.4 or 1.6? S-line models were only available on the continent so is it definitely an S-line?

I have a 1.4 petrol gearbox available.

Thought id edit as steve replied before i refreshed, youv now got 2 options left as youv TDI, is it a standard 75 hp or a 90 hp

hi jigsaw its got s-line stickers on it, don't suppose that means it is, but its a 2004 1.4 tdi manual with box code GRJ

you may be lucky as another member may have the same gearbox still for sale, unless already sold, Manhattan's normally around and imagine if he still has a TDI gearbox available he will see this thread when he comes online , if not you could try Sarge as he was selling TDI parts awile back and may also have a standard gearbox.

The GRJ gearbox is mated with the ATL engine, so I'd imagine the OP's car is a TDi90

@rob80 - does your car have rear disc brakes?

Cheers
Jeff

rob80's registration details show it's a 90 tdi so the GRJ gearbox will have the slightly higher gear ratios which are exclusive to that model.

If nothing is currently available at a realistic price, a box from a 75 tdi should be ok as a temporary measure as it has the same torque capacity and will only increase engine speed by a couple of hundred rpm when cruising.
Worth checking out in more detail if that is an option.

hi thanks for all this help, yes it does have rear breaks, so its only a grj that is good for a long term fix then? what other codes would fit then? (even just for a while) I really do appreciate this help its the only mode of transport to get my wife to hospital 3 times a week

Unless someone has tried we can't be 100% sure a 75 tdi gearbox will fit without any minor changes but I think it's very likely it would be a straight swap.
Codes for the TDi 75 box are EWQ, EEA and GPK. EWQ is the most common but any should be ok

There is no reason why it should not be a permanent fix if you are happy with the slightly higher engine rpm when cruising

A 90 has of course the DMF, so if a 75 box was to fit, the bell housing might need grinding to accommodate the deeper flywheel. You need to do this on the JDD too IIRC.

Very good point.
It's always helpful to be for-warned about potential problems like this.

Hi I have a GRJ gearbox from a 90 tdi in my garage if you are interested, Bought it a few years ago when my gearbox was playing up but in the end i had my box repaired.
