A2 is certainly a surprising little car

Hi all, Just a quick introduction to the forum, recently bought an early 1.4 Petrol A2, and the car has certainly surprised, how good it is. We were lucky that the car has been well maintained and the clever design, and build quality is certainly quite remarkable for a car 20 years old. I owned its Aluminium bigger brother, and you can certainly see, and feel the shared DNA.

An Audi A2 was my favourite company car when I worked for Audi UK. I was lucky to have had half a dozen consecutively all brand new, in all colours. Probably most are likely to still being driven by others in A2OC. A few years after leaving Audi UK I decided to buy one, the same gorgeous colour as in your photograph.

Welcome to A2 ownership and the friendliest, most helpful forum on the internet. In addition to @Howey suggestion, I'd say check your front wishbones, they're known to fail(some reports of failure soon after MoT so don't rely on MoT to pick up the issue. More here...

Dave, the front wishbones on an early one should be the cast type so no such worries - unless the balljoints have previously gone and they've been replaced by the later pressed sort, of course.

Can't post on an introduction thread without saying "Welcome aboard" to the OP :) Nice looking one there, hope it continues to do you proud. It is still worth getting your head under the front and checking which wishbones you have. Assuming you do have the earlier cast type, keep an eye on the rubber balljoint dust covers, get them replaced as soon as there is any sign of perishing. Decent garages should have these on the shelf in all standard sizes. If the balljoint on an early arm goes, you have to replace the whole arm.

A brief description to tell the difference: the earlier cast arms are a slender curved design with a triangular hole in the middle. The later pressed sort have three bolts at the wheel end, where their balljoints are removable.

Welcome aboard, nice looking car that.

It would be quite pleasing to know roughly where in the country your key board sits, and your hat hangs.

Thanks everyone. Try and answer all the questions.

I am down South on the Hampshire Berkshire border.

Thanks for the tips, will give the earth strap and wishbones a check, the lower wishbones have been replaced, as they are quite new, and I was happy to see the underside is in great condition, but will check the ball joint covers.

I replaced the front light bulbs with newer brighter bulbs, got new gas struts ordered for the back hatch (taking an age to come), replaced the fluids, brake, coolant and oils, got the aircon re-gassed (worked fine, but was last done 5 years ago), spare set of alloys to get refurbished, but first need to resolve the EGR issue which has cropped up.

I am getting an P0401 error. I gave the EGR a clean (new gaskets etc.) and an in-situ throttle body clean, but has not resolved the issue. Looks like I will need to remove and clean the throttle body properly.

I also need to resolve the microswitch on the drivers door and passenger door, which only work when they feel like cooperating, made more difficult now that Audi no longer stocks the door mechanism and few second hand choices too, as only Audi classic in Germany sell it new, but they will not sell to the UK due to VAT issues! I am hoping to get some help from Tom on the forum with this issue.

I am genuinely impressed with how the little car steers, and even though the power output is modest, it really feels quicker than it should.

Morning,

The absolute master of all things electrical, microswitches on door locks and so forth is @timmus. He is based in Lancaster but has an annual visit to Leighton Buzzard. He is there at the moment, and might be able to help.

All the best, I am up in Wallingford so I think you're not a million miles away.
