A2 owner from brand new

Hi there

Audi a2 owner from day 1 (2002) , Love the car and has treated me well!

Just getting to that age now where things are starting to go wrong, searched the internet and found this forum :)

Got the abs and the triangle light on the dash, changed the brake light switch today as the brake lights stopped working, hoping this would also put the lights out that have been on for a long time, it sadly didnt :( so if anyone knows a possible fix for that I would be very appreciative if you would let me know!

Also its started getting really hard to start (even when warm) its asif the started motor is 'tired' but ive had the battery tested and thats fine and had a starter motor changed around 2006, if any one knows what this could be would you also let me know!

Great forum and look forward to spending some time on here!

Ta, Elliott.

Hi and welcome.

ABS and traction control light on could mean a few things but it is more than likely something as simple as an abs wheel speed sensor but you will need to have a scan carried out which should provide a fault code to point to the specific problem.

Regarding the starting issue, if you are still using your original battery (which is very likely as the original batteries are great and seem to last around 10 years or so) then i'd say it's time to replace it and that may well solve your problem there, otherwise it could be one of many things but the scan may help to diagnose that problem too.

All the best.

Welcome Elliot. It's great to have new members discovering this site, especially after 10 years of ownership! Members that have owned their A2 from new are a comaparitive rarity now.

Hope you get the wee problems ironed out and enjoy another decade of the A2 treating you well.

A warm welcome from me too Elliott. This forum is one of the friendliest and most helpful places you'll find in the car world in my quite unbiased opinion ;-) I have found it to be a treasure trove of information and experience when it comes to our wee cars.

If it's any comfort for your current issues, our A2 broke down on Monday for the very first time in 130,000 miles and 9 years. Not completely but the engine cut out twice on a 15 mile journey and restarted OK each time. The fault code produced by the scan indicated the cam position sensor was faulty and, sure enough when tested, it was. Got the car back yesterday and the Vengabus (as I like to call it) is back on the road again.

A diagnostic scan can be very helpful in pointing out the culprit and in the hands of the right mechanic these things can be less painful than you might think. Hopefully one of our members near you can recommend a local VCDS/VAG-COM diagnostic set owner and maybe beyond that a garage or mechanic that's well versed on our little A2s.

I'd echo what's been said and say that even if the battery output looks OK I'd suggest a change of a 10+ yr old battery. I changed our this year after 8yrs and the car starts with much more vigour than it had don over the previous 12-18 months. If you have a TDi make sure you go for the higher end of CCA (cold cranking amps) when speccing a replacement.

sounds like some sort of charging problem, battery Alternator starter motor as you have changed one it will be one of the others.
Is it a petrol or a diesel?
