Thinking of buying a secondhand A2. Only question is which engine?
The published performance figures for the 1.4 petrol or diesel seem to suggest its a bit of a snail which I find difficult to believe for an Audi. Of course you don't see many 1.6 for sale or the high output Tdi.
What are your experiences on the performance side I'm not a racer but want to hold my own on the motorway and be able to overtake the slow old people.
Also what toys should I look for?

The 1.4 TDI is most certainly not a snail! [37] In gear acceleration is more than 'adequate'.
Look for sports eats, leather and a disc changer as a minumum. Heated and lumbar adjust seats would be nice if you can get them as would Sat Nav.

I suggest.

On this forum by default - I am no longer an A2 owner (i'm afraid) - but the A3 TDI DSG is 'better' - sorry guys.

1.4 petrol is also quick for its engine size, looking at the numbers the only Focus that is faster is the 1.8!

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield silver ? ? ?

Maersk-old age maybe?

I've deleted the extra post for you.

And (off topic) gives us a write up of the A3 when you've used her for a while.

It depends on your budget but there are plenty of 1.6 FSi for sale and a few 90 PS diesels are now becoming available. The 1.6 FSi didn't feel as quick as my 1.8 Focus despite only 5 bhp less and far less weight. On paper the 1.4 TDi looks slow, but once behind the wheel it bowls along and has excellent mid range acceleration.

Mozz,

I too was looking for a used A2 a couple of weeks ago, after someone had totalled my girlfriend's and my VW Lupo 1.4 TDi PD Sport. Indeed, I was initially interested in purchasing an A2 prior, but it simply wasn't in my budget.

So after saying goodbye to the Lupo, went onto the Audi web site and saw the specs of an X-Reg (2001) A2 1.4 SE, which included all the toys (e.g. Open Sky, SatNav+, Bose Speaker System, Six-Disc Changer, GSM Mobile Prep, etc.). Needless to say, I bought it. But I did have a couple of reservations.

I *LOVED* the performance of the (75 PS) 1.4 TDi PD engine in the Lupo! Had loads of torque and had a cool diesel "thrum" and tuneful turbo whistle. Downside is my girlfriend didn't like it (as much).

From what I understand, and fellow posters correct me if I'm wrong, it's the same lump in the A2 as it is in the Lupo. And if truth be known, I'd prefer the TDi over the petrol A2 I just bought.

Hmm, since the Lupo has been declared a total loss, I could buy it for breaking, transplant it into the A2... [enable "mad mechanic" mode]

Old age, old age! How dare you! Only the KIDs look upon me as old. Gosh I've said it now, but i can whup they'se asses on a mountain carriage! (If that is not illegal or too PC)
Runners my boy I shall do a write-up (hopefully unbiased) once HE has some miles on. Currently 100.
Interestingly, the DSG won't let you do some things until the engine is up to temperature. Good stuff.
Where do you suggest the write-up goes? Other car topics or what?

Yes, go for the carpark section and give us a review after a few hundred miles.

I wonder if DSG will make it down to lower powered VAG cars? Imagine an A2, 110bhp TDI with DSG......

I am the Fifth Column. I am no longer an A2 owner. The A3 TDI DSG is awesome - yoof influence - I do wear a baseball cap but NOT backwards.
