Information A2 Pick-up conversion project

Thanks for taking the bold step of going ahead with this project. Projects such as this always bring a renewed interest in the A2 as a marque in my mind. Well done

As for the tonneau cover, if the shell was anything but aluminium you could have used a magnetic strip around the top of the bed, but thats out the window :)

I suspect that the 'fake slatted grill' was probably an attempt by the then Audi marketing department to make the car look more 'normal'.
As I understand it, it was exactly that. And I agree, the smooth grille from the older ones does look better. The only version improved by the slatted grille to my mind is the Colour Storm edition. The smooth matt version they had looks awful once it starts to fade, but the smooth shiny one doesn't look right next to the matt black arches and bumper inserts.

I would love to convert one of my A2,s to a caddy, I wonder what it would cost ?

The ideal rear cover, would be a rear parcel shelf blind, you would have to extend it, by chopping of the bottom edge adding more material, then simply reattaching, most machinist could do that for you.

The problem is how much extra material can the body of a blind take.

Just a thought, John

Great effort there! I wonder what the cost must've been. Also that's a good way to get rid of the heavy rear bench lol.

I would love to see the face of the MOT tester when it rolled in

Respect for this one of a kind project

Yes, I thought that the smooth grill was more in keeping with the original design of the A2. I suspect that the 'fake slatted grill' was probably an attempt by the then Audi marketing department to make the car look more 'normal'. I also think that the smooth grille (somewhat ironically) makes the car look more modern
I was asked recently by an non car person when they saw an older A2 with smooth grille if it was an electric !

The conversion looks amazing as well . Would like to see it in person . I own an A2 and a 1987 VW caddy so it is in my opinion a superb and original take on the A2 . Did Audi ever do a design exercise like this ?

Thanks for your thoughts on the tonneau cover. I think that i am just going to live with it for a while before I decide what to do.

Yes, it was an Audi Apprentice project (an A2 based Caddy) which was the inspiration for this conversion. The window at the back of our vehicle was actually from a Mk1 VW Caddy. It fits the A2 perfectly
