As a expat living in Spain and driving a Spanish reg A2 please can someone help me with the service intervals of my A2 1.4 TDI. It is two years old with 28000 kms recorded. Should I service it annually or at 12 months, whichever comes first. My service book is in Spanish and my local Audi dealer seems not to know about longlife servicing. He is telling me annually or 15000 kms. Perhaps someone could send me a copy of Service interval pages of an English book ie; pages 4 to 8. Any light on this matter would be much appreciated.

Does the car not have variable service intervals?? Easy way to check is to press the left hand button in the instrument pod while stationary. If it is VSI enabled it will tell you how far left to a service.
If this doesn't help let us know and I'll see what it says in the manual.

The miles to service that you will get from pressing this button should say about 4000miles... 32000miles intervals are the "standard" variable interval for TDIs...

Pressing the left button while stationary (contact switched on!) will tell you how many kms to go to the next service,
whether you have VSI or not. Once it's less than 2000km (I think), it will flash briefly whenever you switch on the engine.
Anyway, the car itself will tell you when a service is due.

Many thanks for the comments but I am still not a lot wiser. I bought the A2 second hand in Feb 2003. It then had 26,400 kms indicated mileage. Pressing the left hand button showed the next service was due in 13,500 kms. The car was initially registered in March 2001 and having owned normal cars before this seemed along while between services. I consequently have just had a service carried out in March 2003, ie 2 year point and now with just over 28,000 kms indicated. The Audi dealer has reset the service indicator and it now shows next serv in 15,000 kms when pressing the left hand button. My Audi dealer is telling me next service in 15,000 kms or 12 months whichever comes sooner. Is this correct?? or will the service indicator show longlife intervals after 500kms as per page 83 of the handbook?

No. The dealer told you: 15000 km or 1 year, whichever comes first. That's Fixed Service Interval, and it's actually the *short* interval between services. VSI or Variable Service Interval is only set up if you explicitly ask for it, it needs different oil. Then you'll notice longer intervals when you press the left button on the dash - but only after you have covered at least 500 km (right after any service, the indicator shows 15000km)

Mine has had its first and only service at 50000. Now at 55600 km and the indicator shows 44900. I'm happy.

Am I right in saying that all UK cars are "set up for VSI"

The reason I ask is that today I got a letter from Audi saying my car was due a service but if the car was set for VSI then I was to ignore the letter.

Any comments appreciated

Mine was... I got the impression from somewhere (probably not a million miles from this forum ;)) that VSI is configured unless you explicitly ask for fixed interval servicing.

My second hand 2001 1.4 TDI was set for VSI, when I bought it in Feb, it said 15,000 Miles.

That was until I read someting on another Audi forum on resetting the counter by pressing both buttons on the rev counter and speedo section and starting the car up. It now says 9300 miles.

Don't I feel stupid...[V]

Again, no. A manual reset like Dave did resets the indicator to a fixed 15000km (9300mi) interval.
Only the dealer can set up VSI.
And in Belgium they're not too keen on setting up VSI.. they much prefer to have you come by more often..

My dealer explained that UK cars come standard with VSI - thus your first service is at around 32000miles. BUT if you don't feel comfortable with that, you can take it in at 15000miles... but due to the different things they do at 15000 vs 32000 your car is from then on on a 15000 mile interval FOREVER and you can't then change back to VSI... So if you're on VSI stay with it... remember they make more money out of servicing your car, than profit in the first instance when selling you the car. That is also the ONLY reason IMHO why they now give you a "standard" three year warranty: so you have to service with them over a 3 times longer period than before and they can make MORE money out of you...
