A2 TDI 6 speed conversion easy

had to make two brackets copied from Google for gear change cable mount, swop over original diff flanges an gear change levers etc off old box bolt it back up job done .
One day on my back with spanners ?

When you have a moment, have you any further details on the brackets you had to make for the cable mount? Is it similar to the MYP mount?

So my immediate questions would be - Who can get us a graph of the different gear RPM vs MPH speeds - And what other gearbox codes can be used for this conversion?

It'd be good to have a list to look out for!

One thing conversion best done on post 03 cars as speedo drive not from gearbox sensor , pre 52 plate cars need feed from sensor an that's a pain as newer VAG 02S 6 speed gearboxes have no sender even casings different completely !!

Is there a way to check the gearbox visually or electronically to see whether you have a speedo from ABS or gearbox? Mine is 02 plate so this probably isn’t for me but I live in hope...

Sounds like a little Excel project, if I had all the raw data in one place I'd do it ...

I've used "gear speed calculator" from JDMLegion, a free app which can be found in playstore apps. A little hard to read because of the dark layout, but to me useful enough to compare ratios.

Further to @nick4tl 's link above, in case anyone is interested herewith is the excel file I used to make the pdf in the above link although I've had to compress it as a zip to allow it to be uploaded. I obtained the ratios, final drive etc from the gearbox component pages of various 7zap diagrams for different VAG models with suitable gearboxes as well as the A2, and chucked them through the calculation at the foot of the table to get speed per 2000rpm.

Hi all,

In this post I have managed to pull together all the various versions of the gearboxes that have been proven to work - NTG, MYP, PTU, PTW - Including comparing the gear ratios (summary: the first three are identical, PTW has - with the final drive ratio taken into account - appreciably longer gears 1-3, gears 4-6 are very slightly longer but you wouldn't notice the difference).

Hope it's useful.

Thanks.

Just had a thought.

What about the PTW / MYP and the dog bone - do they use the same end-piece as the EWQ, or is the dog-bone gearbox casing bracket specific to this gearbox (and would therefore need to have the bushed end and the gearbox end separated & joined up the same way as one does to replace a worn A2 dogbone with a cheap one off a Polo? I have a PTW coming, and was going to replace the dogbone on my car anyway as it is clonking slightly, so I have the new bushing end already. Don't know if the PTW is coming with the mount - will have a look on 7zap to try to identify the part but any thoughts appreciated.

Hello Robin
Have you had any luck fitting the 'PTW' box to your A2 yet? I need to get a gearbox soon, so I just wondered if there were any problems fitting?
Many thanks Andy

PTW Box was fitted to my BHC-75tdi in August. Fitted a new Borg&Beck clutch and new CV joints (as one driveshaft clicked horribly in corners) Mechanic made up the two wee brackets from folded sheet steel (but basically, any L-section metal should work with holes drilled appropriately) that locate the cable carrier from your car into the correct position on the new casing for your existing 5-speed selector mechanism that is also transferred (the two levers that the cables attach to that convert linear cable movements into the rotational movement to select between odd and even gears and the side-to-side gearlever movement equating to vertical movement of the mechanism into / out of the box - these are held onto the selector shaft by a single nut that you need to re-use). Instead of my A2 starter, we used a CAYC starter motor (1.6tdi) - it is normally used in a stop-start car and apart from having to rig up a connector (I now have the correct one for the mechanic to splice onto the cable), it fits the PTW box perfectly. Because of its normal use, it is also a bit beefier than my original starter (I think it is also about 200W more powerful), so the start feels a bit more positive (and it doesn't squeal afterwards either). Worst part of the whole job according to the mechanic was releasing the driveshaft splines. The dogbone swap was simple - the Polo tdi bushing end unbolts from the pressed steel bracket at the other end which is swapped for the one off your 5-speed box, but only uses 2 of the three holes to attach to the casing. Box was filled up with fresh Bluemotion oil (the p/n is specified in one of the 6-gear threads, I just don't have it here).

For the first couple of days the change was a bit tight forwards / backwards, but an aborted cable adjustment (undid the appropriate gear cable connector whereupon it started to rain so I put it back, maybe it moved a fraction of 1 mm?) - and then use for a few days loosened it up to the point now where it is indistinguishable from my old box, except when you use 6th at speed whereupon the engine noise just disappears.

So in short - no issues at all encountered fitting this unlike some of the 5-speed Bluemotion boxes where a small part of the casting needs to be removed to bolt the gearbox onto the frame mounting, and also having changed the starter to that used in cars PTWs are normally fitted to, encountered no issues some people have had re-using A2 starters where the pinion doesn't quite locate right.

Further to other questions about gear ratios above, although on paper 1-5 are slightly higher (1-3mph at 2000rpm) for the same engine speed as the normal gearbox, in action you just don't notice it, pulling away is normal, can still tool around in a supermarket carpark in 1st / 2nd <15mph without bogging down, and arguably the slightly higher gearing, particularly in 3rd, seems to match the characteristics of a healthy BHC very nicely when accelerating onto a dual carriageway. I've not done a long drive yet due to Covid so can't comment on long distance economy in 6th compared to several years doing this drive mostly in 5th at ~2800-3000rpm.

Any other questions please feel free to ask, I may not know the answer but someone else might.

To add to Robin’s post on the gear oil, Opie oils recommend the Redline MT LV gear oil for all VAG six speed (including PTW / MYP etc.) gearboxes if you want to improve the gear change and fuel economy a touch - the LV part stands for low viscosity - it’s thinner than standard, however they are adamant it is such a good oil it will protect the gearbox just as well and yield the above benefits.

I trust Opie Oils know what they’re on about (and that in these litigation-prone times, that they are 100% confident in making a recommendation that differs from the manufacturer’s spec), so my car has been filled with this, as has my 2016 MY Touran 2.0 TDi. It’s expensive, but it’s fill and forget - and in any case I am a big believer in never trying to save on lubricants.

I have not asked whether this oil could be used as an upgrade for the standard / five speed gearboxes too, but I have found at least one credible internet source that suggests it is.

Things may have changed since this post from 2010 but genuine VW/Audi gearbox oils generally have an extremely low viscosity rating

Cheers Spike
