A2 TDI engine size? 1390 or 1422cc?

Hi,

My 2001 1.4tdi I assume must be an AMF engine, on Wikipedia it is listed as 1422cc, however when I put my reg into totalcarcheck.co.uk it shows as 1390cc?

What is correct!? Not a big deal but if its over 1400cc I get a few more pence per mile from work 😅 it all adds up!

Cheers,
Jonathan

My '04 Tdi says it is 1390cc on the V5 ... . so it appears that there were occasional glitches in the paperwork at initial registration.

I would imagine that (even when incorrect) mileage would be calculated on the basis that the v5 figure was the correct one.

This is another area that has issues. The 1.4 tdi engine is indeed 1422cc. The problem stems back to the original dealer incorrectly selecting the diesel engine and only selecting the 1.4 option which is the 1390cc petrol variant. Another "mistake" that can be made is registering the car as a Colour Storm.

In the Audi Engine and Gearbox Self Study Guide, it states definitively that the AMF engine is 1422cc and the AUA is 1390cc

The bore and stroke of the 3 cylinder 1.4 diesel engine is based on the 4 cylinder 1.9 diesel engine.

As the capacity of the 4 cylinder 1.9 diesel engine is 1896cc, it follows that the capacity of the 3 cylinder 1.4 diesel engine is 1422cc.

It should be easy enough to send the V5 back to DVLA to correct the engine capacity mistake.

Once the original dealer registers it wrongly, then your engine serial number will always show as registered i.e. either correctly as 1422 or wrongly as 1390 and the DVLA will not change it.

The Audi A2's 1.4 diesel engine has a bore x stroke: 79.5 mm × 95.5 mm.

Therefore, the radius of the cylinder is 3.975cm and the height of the cylinder is 9.55cm.

The capacity of the engine is 3 x pi x radius squared x height (in centimetres).

3 x 3.14159265359 x 3.975 x 3.975 x 9.55 = 1422.16100064cc (or 1422cc to the nearest cubic centimetre).

Hi J
I had the same issue when I purchased my 2002 1.4 TDI back in 2017. It was my insurance company that flagged the V5 error thus refused to insure the A2 until the matter was resolved. I also pointed out that the TDI A2s I had been viewing had the engine sizes listed mostly as 1390cc, only the odd one was listed with the correct 1422cc engine size, They informed me that any vehicle with the incorrect engine size listed on the V5 would automatically null and void any insurance. Firstly I contacted DVLA, they advised me to contact Audi UK and get an Audi official letter headed signed and stamped conformation regarding sed engine size error from Audi UK, then apply for an amended V5 from DVLA. If memory serves me correct it took around 3 months to get the new V5.

Audi UK were apologetic and very helpful, I can only suggest that all A2 owners with the wrong engine size on there V5 do the same. DVLA were also very helpful.
