Service done including fuel filter
Temperature sensor done
Still can't work it out

It looks like the Video link has a problem.

When you say the Temperature sender was done, sorry to ask, but since there are two separate temperature sensors are you sure the correct one was replaced (several people have made a mistake and replaced the wrong one, but you may already know this)

Is it just when cold? If so, it could be the glow plugs?

Is the starter motor spinning quickly enough?

It is easy to damage the fuel filter when fitting it, was there a starting problem before the service?

Glow plugs, fuel supply, could be a variety of reasons. Get It plugged in to see if any fault codes are stored.

Hi,

Perhaps you could elaborate a little on the issues and checks made.

You appear to be advising the car, a TDi, has a starting problem, and some work has been carried out.

Does the car start? (advising it has a starting problem doesn't really say if it does start or not).
Did it start, or have no problem before the service?
You advise no faults logged, but how has this been checked?
You advise there is no issue with the new fuel filter. How has this been verified?

Does the starter motor turn the engine over but it never fires, no matter how long it is tried?
Is the car on level ground or is it pointing up or down hilll?

A detailed description of what appears wrong, and how the issue is being troubleshooted can help in identifying possible causes, but a few word answers don't really convey the message very well.

Cheers
Jeff

Hi there I have tried changing the fuel filter and that was dirty but now it's a brand new one a garage checked it and replaced it
Then my flywheel and clutch went so I changed that
Recently my starter motor went so I put a new one in it does crank but on the 5th attempt
Of cranking it over it just about starts
If I spray easy start it starts straight away
Codes checked on computer at garage all clear

Hi,

Okay - so it is starting but taking quite a lot of cranking before it fires.
When it does fire up, does it run well without issues?
When it has been started, if you turn it off straight away, does it fire straight up or still takes ages to fire again?
If the engine is up to temperature, does it fire up on first crank?

Easy start is not a good product to use. Many suggest that once it's been used it needs to be used all the time.

Some garages use generic fault scanners that do not diagnose all possible fault codes logged or do not read all the vehicle controllers.
Having the car scanned by a VAG indy, or a dealer is the best way to troubleshoot issues.
VCDS is the tool of choice to troubleshoot issues.

It runs well once started but once u turn off it takes ages again to start unfortunately i only drive it 20 miles a day so is never been full 90 temperature

Yeah they used easy start as a test and yeah looks like I'll have to do that but it's been on three computers so confusing

Can you advise if you know if this is a TDi 90 or 75?
How long have you owned the car, and has it always had this same starting problem, or has the problem only recently occured?
When you've had you car scanned, has anyone provided you with either a print-out or emailed you with the data-file showing the output of a full scan?
Do you know if the new fuel filter that has been fitted is a genuine OE filter or a generic filter?

Hi it's a 90 atl engine and the fuel filter was generic I think but the problem was there before filter change I haven't had a print out just got told
I've had this car for 3 months recently problem starting recently

Hi,

Okay - now we're getting somewhere.

It is best to only use OE service parts, as the difference in cost is relatively so small you might as well use the parts that are specifically made for these cars.
I would also only recommend using only OE sensors when replacing. They are usually substantially more expensive, but you'll only need to do the job once, so in my book it's worth spending more on the item and only paying one labour charge.

As for the current issue, I would suspect you have a failed crankshaft sensor.
Some generic fault code readers do NOT pick up the fault code for this failed sensor.
It would be wise to ask any garage who is going to work on your car if they use VCDS. If they say yes, ask them to perform a full scan and provide the print-out. If they don't use VCDS, perhaps it's best to find a garage that does use this tool.

If you venture along to any of the social events this club runs (a great fun day out whatever social you go to), many of us have the VCDS tool and will happily scan your car free of charge and explain any issues you might have

I'll see if I can locate any previous threads about crankshaft sensor failure/replacement for you

Edit:

Here is one thread but the pictures are missing, however this should explain the method used to fix the problem:

Right thank you I will do that I will change the crankshaft sensor as that and the glow plugs are only left now

Also when did this problem start? Was it sudden or has it been getting worse over a period of time.
