A2 TDI violent shaking

Ok so it looks like you are making progress
Car will not run without the crank sensor but will run with slower starting without the cam sensor
It does look like your pulling of the wiring to the crank sensor may have finished it off. No bad thing there
Hopefully all will be well on Saturday
The crank sensor change I think needs the removal of the oil cooler. I’ve done it once but can’t quite remember

Cheers. Paul

Ok. Finally got round to fitting the new crank sensor. Good news it now runs but still has the same issue as before with lumpy running. At the moment it runs rough from idle to 2000. Next step is to swap injectors with my spare engine and re check readings on vcds.
On a side note I’m interested in having the balance gear/chain replaced an I’m would appreciate anyone who could advise rough pricing at in indie specialist.

Around 8 hours labour if they know what they’re doing, otherwise 10 hours.

This is what I got when I asked around for quotes.

Haven't experienced this problem with an A2 but a relatives 9N3 Polo 1.2 3 cylinder would shake violently when it was off an cylinder. A new coil usually sorted it but the compression was reduced and eventually it happened again. Turned out to be cracked head which should have sent it off to the big scrapyard in the sky.

It actually caught fire when oil pissed all over the manifold but it was dealt with quickly with little damage, it was then sold for spares or repair.

I am probably overly “on a mission” about this subject at the moment, but I think your “least likely” cause could well be the culprit at that mileage.

Trust me, if you’ve been lucky enough to get to way over 200k miles on your original chain, tensioner and sprockets(!), they need replacing urgently! I’ll eat my hat if you tell me that it didn’t really need doing after!
Sorry it’s a short message but you were spot on about the balance chain / gear. The chain had worn some of its rollers completely and the balance shaft gear had zero teeth. B&F Autos carried out the work for me and now the engine runs better, smoother and quieter than anytime in the 9 years I’ve owned it so all I can say is your hat is safe for a while longer.

Thanks everyone for their input on this matter.
I’ll try and post photos if I get chance.
Lee.
Thanks to Gary at B&F Autos. Excellent service and VERY informative throughout.

Thanks for reporting back and glad the issue is resolved.

It seems like this issue of wear in the oil pump and balance shaft assembly is back on-point at the moment. TDI owners should really take heed of the advice to change their chain and tensioner at the same time as the next cambelt change after 125k miles - as failures (and near-misses) seem to start occurring at the 130-150k miles mark, going from evidence contained on this forum.

Hi again,
Just to add, the chain sprockets etc were original 2003 parts that had 238,500 miles on them.

It actually ran quite well and smooth for a while before it was replaced. It just shook slightly from idle to about 2000rpm but it was noisy as hell.
