A2 to VW UP Defection

The wallet and manuals and the hard touch buttons were posted out this morning so should be with you soon.

Sorry to see you leave A2 ownership. I have regular use of my daughters Up! Black edition (2013 plate) and can agree with your upgrade choice of car. The Up! 3 cylinder 75bhp petrol engine requires work to get the best out of it, but sounds great.
Good luck
Steve

The wait is over and it is finally here.

Oooo, likey :)

What are the little holes under the DRL's for? They look a little small for front parking sensors ... adjusters maybe?.

Virgin to the marque sorry I do not know but I will try to find out.
No owners manuals in the glove box so they are posting them down to me.
Hopefully there will be something in there regarding the holes.

Aren't the lower lights fog lights? Up! DRL's are usually within the light cluster.

Sorry that was just my guess at them being DRLs - because that's where the DRLs are on my Volvo (instead of it having foglights, it has to be said). So probably the holes are adjusters for the foglights then.

Here are just a few first impressions of the UP.
The difference the turbo makes in the TSi compared to the 75bhp Up model is huge,it turns a fairly run of the mill city car into one that is great fun to drive with increased torque and no need to floor the pedal to get brisk acceleration.
The engine revs are much lower and give a more relaxed feeling than the 75 which felt as if there should be another gear to change up into to stop the engine noise becoming intrusive,I found the same problem with my wifes petrol A2.
Sadly it is nowhere near as practical as the A2 in regard to internal space and seat removal but the seats do fold to make a flat surface from rear door to the rear of the front seats utilising the raised boot floor panel.
There are a few toys to play with like smart phone integration with a built in cradle, multi function steering wheel and my favourite the sd card slot so that I can have all my music at my fingertips without the need for an mp3 player and the connecting leads and it does get a full sized spare wheel in a well in the boot with the toolkit.
Handling is very reminiscent of my old Morris Mini from the `70s very agile and lively and you do feel that you are going faster than you actually are.
Fuel consumption is hovering around the 50mpg which is not bad considering that I have been enjoying a few speedy blasts.
That figure is on the cars computer estimation,it will be interesting to see how accurate it is on the first fuel re fill.
It is a great little car and I am well pleased with it however I must say that if a three year old A2 TDi was available now I would still go for the A2.
I have owned three over the past twelve years and the total weekly running costs for everything including main dealer servicing,MoT`s,road tax, insurance, diesel and mods like leather and alcantara sports seats,Bose,iPod connection, leather steering wheels and gear shift, handbrake etc has been around the £22 mark.It will be interesting to see how the UP compares with this over time.

Just got through my first full tank of petrol and after the refuel I calculated 47.9 mpg and the cars computer reckons it at 50.1 mpg.
That was mixed driving,a few short runs into town and the local Dogs Trust and a couple of 100+ miles round trip so not too bad.

Just a little update on the VW High Up 90 Tsi after a full year for anyone who may be interested.
I am very pleased with it in most aspects, fun to drive and holds the road well in the corners, the turbo gives it enough get up and go and it is reasonably cheap to run with an average of 50mpg over the year and I do not have a light touch on the pedal.
The toys are usefull too with a cradle and usb power point to connect and charge a mobile phone for use as a sat nav,far better than my Garmin.
Steering wheel controls and heated seats and full size spare.
Music of your choice on tap with the card slot,I use a 32gb sandisk which holds many hours of music from my cd collection.
Gripes are minor but annoying, the seats do fold flat but the backs sit on top of the seat squab rather than the whole lot folding up out of the way making it nowhere near as versatile as my old A2,not as much room for the dog which is not good on long trips for her,the road tax is £150 not £30 though the 2016 model of the same spec is £30.
Slightly tinny in comparison with the A2 especially the switches and also the air con is not climate and not as powerful as the A2 unit.
All in all a very good motor though I do think that I may need something slightly bigger if my dog lasts, maybe an A3 sportback or maybe just a smaller dog next time.:)

The 90 Tsi high up is a good car. Some prefer it over the GTI version for its ride comfort alone. ?

I didn`t consider a GTi on price for one thing and also lack of rubber on the wheels. The potholes here are cavernous,I split a tyre in a deep one when I had the last A2,I don`t think the GTi wheels would fair well on these roads. Also not a fan of the tartan interior or the silly noise machine.
I am not sure that the difference in performance would be that useable as it`s only marginal.

To update my ownership experience from a year ago.
Our Seat Mii 2012 plate (owned from new) recently started to lose coolant. Garage diagnosed the radiator was corroded. Whilst they were at it, they recommended replacing the aircon condensing radiator, which wasn’t holed but had seen better days.

Great cars; built to a budget

Andrew
