A2 wheel bearing tool

Hi
I was wondering if anyone in the Glasgow area has the special wheel bearing tool that I could borrow as my front near side bearing needs replaced.
Thanks in advance.
Doug.

I see these kits pop up from time to time, will the 85mm version work, or do you have to stick to the 72mm?
The bearing carrier (or ‘steering knuckle’, if you’d rather) has a 72mm bore into which the bearing is seated. An 85mm tool will not fit through a 72mm hole, meaning it cannot be used to change the A2’s bearings.

Cheers,

Tom

I wonder how much wheel bearing change should cost? Cheers
I don't know but if you assume £50 per hour for labour compared to the price of the tool I can't see how this can be done in a fraction over 1 hour. That is after you have found a garage that has the tool.

I had this job done by Audi, they kept the car three days. The first technician cracked the reluctor ring and they had to order a replacement bearing. The second bearing was fitted by a master technician who admitted it was a time consuming job.

So DIY guys with basic knowledge, like oil change etc., shouldn't even try doing that job, even with the tools acquired? I hope this won't be an issue for a long time, I've been dealing with enough as it is, but it makes me wonder how'd I deal with it.

It wouldn't stop me doing the job; but I would allocate a weekend for it and wouldn't be surprised if I had issues pulling the drive flange. I have a TDi and the splines are bonded into the flange.
I have a bit more experience than oil changes, also have heavy tools and an A2 manual on my hard drive. Also retired so if it beats me I don't have the problem of how to get to work on Monday.

Hi thanks for the replies.

I phoned a local Audi VW Skoda specialist and I asked for a quotation to change it and it was £295 + VAT and I asked him if they use the special tool and he said there is no special tool. They wold use a press and if any other garage said tit needed a special tool they are making it up and would be using a press. This do not fill me with confidence.
I had the same bearing changed by another garage about three years ago and that’s it noisy again so I suspect they didn’t use the tool either.
Now wondering the best course of action.

I'm looking at this kit too at the moment.

I'll be renewing a lot of the front end parts in the coming couple of weeks hopefully.
I've just taken delivery of shockers all round, disc, pads drums etc.

Will be having a look at bushes etc and have a wheel bearing that's shot, so will be needing something for that.

I have got my hands on one of these, in anticipation,
Front Suspension Bush Removal

Have you seen this video, he uses one of those kits... looks OK to me (from 4.00 on).

@dougster I can’t say if it is strong enough. Bought it and never used it

How come it's never been used, shame it's sat there, is it looking for a new home? 😉
I had a problem with seized front splash guards on a MK2 golf. Had to pull the flange to drill and coil the threads. Expected the same with the A2 so bought the tool. However got the screws with a cold chisel, tool therefore not used as yet.
No, it quite likes its home here.
