A2 windows failed MW51BBN

Hi,
Please help, my A2 has been off the road for a year now.
I'm still trying to find why the front windows became intermittent, then failed completely.
I'm a mechanic (Mainly 2 wheels), and work with fairly modern electronics every day. None of the software/hardware I have shows any fault codes.
Having bought a used drivers door switch and a drivers door motor to try, I'm still stuck with a car I can't MOT.

I've stripped out most of the interior, and made sure all earths are clean and tight, also coated with ACF50. There are no signs of corrosion on the door posts. Not sure of anywhere else to look.

Assuming youve checked the main earth strap in the engine bay? Given what you said re your experience, I’m sure you’ve done this already but disconnecting the battery, dissipating the charge and then re connecting has worked for me in the past. This sounds like a classic CCU issue though?

Agreed - it sounds like a CCCU issue. A diagnostic scan with VCDS would be the best way forward. A car on a '51 plate will likely have the unreliable 'Q' variant of CCCU.

Thanks,

Matt.

Long time off the road. No mention of the battery age / condition. Start with the easy jobs first. Fully charge or replace the battery, while there check carefully the terminal connections and the block and contents attached to the positive lead. Now resync the electric windows by holding the switch up for a couple of seconds. Now retry the windows individually on the drivers door switches then on each individual door switch. If the windows do come come ideal time to apply a silicone lubricant to the door glass channels. The last check to try is the windows should drop when unlock is held in on the remote or the key in the door lock held on unlock. Conversely the windows should all lift when the lock button is held on the remote or the key held in the lock position.

If this does not work then further investigation is required including a possible faulty CCCU.

I've replaced the battery with a 5 year warranty Yuasa (Ouch!).
Could you recommend someone local with the correct diagnostic kit?
Nothin I do makes the windows move..

The VCDS list is here:

Number 12 on that list is in Leeds so I'd send him a PM asking if he can help.

His listing doesn't specifically state that he has VCDS so you need to confirm that, and if he has VCDS-Lite you need to find out whether it's registered.

Thanks again for your replies, it's very kind of you all to try and help.
I will let you know how I go on.

Obviously, long term, I want the windows to work, but if it will pass MOT as is that would be wonderful.
I will contact my MOT garage and reply soon..
I have most of the interior dismantled on the back seats :). But I'm sure that would just make them smile rather than fail it :) Thanks again
Graham.

My MOT testing station confirm I can still pass with non-functioning front window winders, so I am loosely assembling the interior, and presenting it for MOT.

Hello!
I’m sure you’ve solved your issue but just in case, I’m recently joined and recently new owner - I’ve also had this problem. My issue turned out to be fuses. There’s a map on the inside of the fuseboard door and it led me to two fuses - one for each door.
My passenger do didn’t work and the fuse looked fine but with some contact cleaner and a general shifting / swapping of the fuses themselves, I sorted the issue.
Perhaps not much use to you but worked for me.
