BBC has an article on 1st MOT test failures on 3rd anniversary (Renault Meganes is worst)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8461394.stm

There is also a link to a German TUV ranking report dated 17.12.2009
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/15_01_10_tuv.pdf
It _think_ it says 2-3 year test period - not too sure what that means - maybe my lack of German.

Here the A2 is ranked 59 (1=best) with the other Audi's doing better

Rank Model %failure 1,000Km
17 Audi A3.....3,3.....52
23 Audi A4.....3,5.....69
30 Audi A6.....3,9.....84
36 Audi TT.....4,0.....40
49 Audi A8.....4,4.....81
59 Audi A2.....4,7.....41

The range is as follows (I've given 2 at the bottom as the %failure is significantly different)
Rank Model....................%failure 1,000Km
1 Porsche 911..................1,9.....35
to
124 Chrysler PT Cruiser.....13,8.....45
125 Kia Carnival...............29,3.....57

Its usually down to lack of maintinance,
my 2004 had an advise for 2 tyres last year,I knew they were getting that way, however I said has it passed or not,it had.
its got 100k miles on it and apart from 2 tyres ( they were off an A3 anyway and I was scrubbing them to nothing before fitting winter tyres)
its passed since new.
I however had more faith in my mitsubishi that never failed in 9 years, due to the preventative maintinance I did to it.
When working at a peugeot dealer, all 205's +309's used to fail the first one as they didnt use plastic coated brake pipes or werny greased up in time.
However with some cars ya just cant polish a turd

7 years old, 50k miles, original tyres and brakes, (wifes car) serviced annually by non Audi dealer since warranty expiry, had one bulb changed and indicator board. How do people give them a poor MOT record?

Just took my A2 for its MOT, having fitted 4 new tyres and checked it thoroughly, and to my annoyance it failed! Why? ... cos one tiny little rear number plate bulb was out, the one thing I did not check. The garage replaced it anyway (cost £1.45) and then passed the car.

So far so good you might think, but in terms of statistics it means another perfectly sound and perfectly maintained car has been listed as a failure, for the stupidest of reasons. Why didn't they just replace the bulb quietly and pass it, without recording another failure. It makes me suspect that the new MOT process is almost geared to finding the maximum number of failures. I smell a political rat in this somewhere.

AND ... why does the MOT wallah feel the need to adjust every parameter of my driving position, just to move the car from the car park to the test bay? When I got it back the seat had been adjusted for rake, position and height, and the steering wheel moved. Seriously irritating!

John, I feel your pain, same thing with the rear bulb and Failed.

A few years back, I owned a MR2 (jap import) and it had no rear fog light on the car. I took it to the local MOT garage which the owner knows my Dad (always helps!) and when they MOT'd the car he said all was well, but he couldn't find the switch for the Fog lights. Rather than come clean I jumped in and pressed the brake pedal whilst he was standing behind the car and I was surprised that he bought it! So then the tricky part came as he asked where the switch was for future reference and I pointed to the immobiliser switch and said 'Yeah, this one down here, it's not very obvious!'. Sadly they are no longer in business and it does make me wonder why?!

You know what this means guys? Only one thing......

THEY'RE JEALOUS! :D
Think of it... This nice little alu-car comes in to an MOT and they wish they had one or that their favorite car was as good as the A2, what do they do about it? They fail it!

When I used to own the original Honda Insight, I used to enjoy freaking out the MoT tester when they couldn't find any emissions with their reader (the original Insight only emitted 80g CO2 and very little else) - they used to rev the engine to about 6000 rpm to get a reading!

I almost failed the emissions test. The limit for the "K-Wert" in Sweden was at the last visist to the station 1,3 and at the first attempt this value wasn't reached. It took three attempts to get it down to 1,2.

This test is carried out by measuring the soot particles at the rev limit of the motor. The motor is running at over 4000 rpm in neutral for a very short period of time, but it still a very disturbing moment for me.

I think it's more to do with owners than model. As you go down that (Audi) list they are more likely to be privately owned wheras the ones at the top are likely to be fleet. Fleet cars tend to get serviced and MoT'd at the same time. Thus any potential failure wouls be dealt with at the service.

Private owners are more likely to put it in and then fix anything it fails on.

A tad off topic, but I hope you don't mind....MPG Lover, I also own a 2001 Honda Insight, and my MOT station does not even bother testing the emissions. They should on this car but cannot be bothered, which suits me......The Insight has averaged 88mpg over the 50,000 miles I have done, and on my 40 mile motorway commute it averages 107mpg, with a best door to door figure of 122 mpg Also, 70 MPG around town if I try hard now I have fitted MIMA:D With MIMA fitted (Manual Intigrated Motor Assist) I can now actualy move the car using it's electric throttle, so now I could probably demand they don't test the emissions, as Hybrids with electric drive capabilities are exempt:)....Zero VED as well, and all for £5,000

Sorry for continuing the off topic nature of this, but I have long been fascinated by the original Honda Insight. Is there a good website or forum where I could learn more, as I know a few folk on here have them as well.

Thanks

Welcome Silverbrewer, do you also have an Audi A2? Good idea to get MIMA fitted. I actually owned 3 different Insights between 2003 and 2006 (when I would get itchy feet once a year) and organised an Insight Owners Day at the Honda Institute. I would probably still buy a 2003 or younger original Insight in the unlikely event one came up for sale.

John H - check out www.insightcentral.net - I used to be a Moderator on this website and although it has gone a bit downhill since being taken over by a commercial organisation, I believe the Encyclopaedia & Knowledge Base sections are still intact (link on left hand side). Hope this helps

Thanks for that. It used to be that owning lots of cars was too expensive in annual upkeep, but if it is tax free, and now that car insurance is relatively cheap, adding an Insight to the stable is an appealing idea. There are 3 for sale on Autotrader, but all pre 2003.
