A2Cars 6-speed conversation insight

Hi everyone

There have been some discussion on here about where Tony of A2Cars sourced his 6-speed conversions. I had mine swapped for a 6-speeder back in the day, and it's exhibiting a couple of problems.

Very 'crunchy' going into 3rd.
Won't remain in 6th at all - it's like it's not properly engaging the gear - just pops it out into neutral.

So, to the questions:

Is it just a cable adjustment issue?
Should I try and track back to the people who made the conversions to see if they could fix it for me?
Should I cut my losses and pop a 5-speed back in or source a different 6-speed?

I see lots of more recent 6-speed discussions on here, and while that is an option, I'm not sure of the likely costs.

Thanks for any insight as ever.

Start with adjustment and the cheaper options first like a fluid change and work back from there.

Worst case just get it rebuilt

Good steer - I'll have a go at the adjustment this week.

:)

its likely the euro conversion which added a 6th gear to the std 5 speed box
if the original box was not rebuilt then the syncro on 3rd is a weak point
cable adjustment would be my starting point
did the issue with jumping out of 6th gear start gradually or all at once ?

Hi Paul

the jumping out of 6th started pretty quickly. Occasionally for about two weeks. Now does not engage ever.
You put it in 6th slot and it doesn’t complete the change.

I’ll try the adjustment for sure this week and report back.
That’s probably the obvious place to start. Just sometimes needs you guys to confirm the strategy.
Thanks

Hi. We had yvonnes white a2 fitted with the 6 speed conversion from Tony quite soon after he started doing them. It’s still silky smooth and precise I can’t remember what miles it had done at the point of change over but it’s now on 216k miles.
The gearbox was sourced from Germany and were rebuilt and fitted with the new gear and end cover then tested before Tony picked them up and drove them home.
I would say it’s possibly your gear linkage or the “tower and bearings” that may need attention. I’m not sure if the tower got rebuilt or the gearbox was shipped minus the tower.
Most certainly it isn’t a euro conversion kit. It was a kit of parts the German company had put together. I will look up the history and see how many miles the car had on it when we had it converted.
Good luck with sorting it out.
