I have the above fault on my 2001 TDI, The manual says the ABS light will come on if the ESR fails, so thinking this is related, Red ! comes on in the info display if you go over about 10mph, saying i shouldn't i guess because of the ABS ESR ? I

History , the ABS ESR unit was damaged before i brought the car following an accident i brought a recon one which is now fitted to the car, i was told it didn't need programing just plug and play, the lights have never gone out could this unit be at fault or need programing ?

Replacement ABS controllers do need programming and it's a pretty involved affair too! I was asked to code in my unit by a bodyshop as they didn't have the where-with-all to do it after it needed replacing post-accident last year and it took me a while, and I needed scans from the old unit too.

Without VCDS info and scans, I can't tell whether it is faulty or just in need of programming. They are very sensitive units though and if there's any external sign of damage, it's likely that the controller is goosed!

Cheers,

Mike

The old unit def. was u/s, hole in the front of it . I asked about programing before buying the recon unit .........

"Uncoded simply means, the ABS does not contain any specific software relating to a particular vehicle and therefore you can use it on your car without any problems & it does not require any programming."

Nope, it deffo needs coding and a load of basic settings need to be carried out too, to sync it with the various other sensors on the car (yaw, speed, turn etc).

If you've got the full version of VCDS then you can do it yourself, otherwise it's a dealer job and take the old ABS unit too, as they'll need codes from it.

Cheers,

Mike
