Abs Light (!) and engine cut out!!

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem i am having with my A2

I am having problems with the car overheating. I think that is what is happening.. i was sat in traffic for around 20 mins and the car was running fine before hand and then just cut out. However after leaving the car for 1/2 an hour it started as per normal as if nothing had happened.

Also am having a problem with the (ABS) light coming on. I could be driving along not breaking and the lights come on. This only seems to happen randomly but only when the petrol tank is half full. If I keep the tank full the light never comes on.

I have had the car at bexley audi a number of times and they told me the engine was misfiring and charged me £600 to fix the problem. However after getting the car back and realising that the problem had in fact not been fixed and being told by them i might as well sell the car to them at a reduced price. I have given up taking the car to them. I really love this car and dont really want to get rid of it. However I am getting to the end of my tether.

I now have a mechanic that has been really helpful. But he said these problems could be a number of things and was wondering if anyone else has had any similar problems. So i can give him a head start.

Thank you for all your help.

Year, Engine, Miles is minimum information.

Diagnostics Scan results?

Get teh mechanic on here, I'm sure we can turn him into a specialist :D

Hi,

sorry new to all this...

Car Audi A2 1.6 FSI on an 03 plate. Miles 82k.

Thank you for all your help. Also when the mechanic plugs it in to computer it has no faults to report. Hope this helps.

When did it happen? Any signs on the dash that it was "Overheating" or did it just stop?
Difficulty starting when cold / warm? Idle is smooth or lumpy --> it "hunts" or is a steady 800rpm?
Possibly coil pack.
Your ABS light is probably a dodgy connector somewhere, and I doubt very much that your fuel tank status has anything whatsoever to do with it.

Hi,

No real signs it was over heating.. just was sitting in traffic for about hour and 1/2 only moved a few hundred yards in that time. Was actually driving really well before that. I even checked the water was not below the min level but that was fine. The Abs thing.. has been happening randomly over the past month or so.. it does not affect anything when driving. seems to be fine. After cutting out, i left it for half and hour and then it started fine as if nothing had happened. I have been told it might need a new ECU Relay. Do you think i should just call audi and order one?

Thank you for all your help.

Hi Kerry
Are you within driving distance of any club members who have VagCom diagnostics as a scan for fault codes would be really helpful in troubleshooting this problem.
I've been way off beam with my 'best guesses' recently but it could be the engine speed sensor. This is the only sensor on the car which can shut the engine down and faulty units can be tempremental, especially when hot.
Regarding the ECU relay, don't buy any parts without first having a diagnostic scan

hi, i can't say anything about engine cut out but abs is normal issue in a2. as my car is normally showing this warning i got diagnose fault and it was brake switch, i changed it but light is still there. i think its electric issue. but definately not brake switch. i have noticed after driving 10 to 20 miles, switch off car and same time turn igintion on. most of the time warning light goes off..
cheers gg19.

Thank you eveyone for your help. The mechanic thinks its an electric issue too as he has changed the brake light switch. Will just have to see if any thing else goes wrong.

thank you again. x
