Hi, advice needed !!

Just put my 2004 1.4 TDI (232,000 miles) through MOT & have been advised that i will need a Steering Rack, Turbo & Clutch within the next six months.

Do i bite the bullet & get it repaired or shall offer it to a forum member for spares & then buy another one ?

Looking forward to your views.

Thanks
Bo

It all depends if you can do the work yoursel or not. Could get very costloy if its a garage doiung the work. If you do decide to sell for parts pm me.

At that mileage it’s always tricky to know for sure what to do. If it’s ultra high spec and you know it well then it could easily do another 100,000 + but then again you can buy a really good A2 with 100,000 less for under 2k and off set some of that with recycling your current A2?

Does the MOT Station do repairs, ie are they looking for business? Generally you would notice the clutch getting worse, biting point, judders etc. As others have said it depends if you can do the work yourself. Most importantly how much do you love this particular A2?
I would run around in it a few a couple of months to see if anything manifests whilst keeping an eye out in the marketplace for a suitable replacement knowing that @A2Steve is not too far from you to purchase it for spares to keep other A2's on tne road.

I've had to get my car steering rack rebuilt twice in 14 years of ownership, due to the oil leak.
To ensure that the rack is leaking check the steering pump oil level.
Some companies that sell rebuilt ones mix them up with polo racks and those are not compatible.
Attached photo shows the difference - the steering shaft angle, polo rack on the left, A2 on the right.
Please note that these are LHD racks.
If you can find a reliable rack service to do the rebuild, do it, for me that was the cheapest safe option.

I just tried to replace my rack with a Ridex rack from Autodoc. The OEN is correct but they seem to have mixed it up with the Lupo rack. A lot of work to waste... Any tips on a rebuilt rack at a fair price that will fit? Can't find any service shop nearby.
