Airbag disable?

I need to get access behind/under the dash to access a mobile phone car kit.

Do I need to disable the air bag on the passenger side?
If so, is it sufficient to disconnect the battery?

These might seem like dumb questions, but my other cars (1990 A100 Avant Quattro, 1989 Porsche 928GT) are too old for fancy things like airbags.

I'm sure there is a simple answer, but I don't want it to go off in my face!

Thanks in advance.

I presume you need to get to the passenger side for some reason, even though all the fuses are on the drivers side yes?

If so, for safetys sake, I would disconnect the battery with the key in the ignition and on, then wait a few minutes before disassembling the dash lower panels.

Cheers,

Mike

Mobile Phone unit is behing glove box

Thanks, Mike

The mobile phone unit (Bluetooth) is behind the glove box. It works fine when the engine isn't running, but when the engine is running it sounds (to the guy on the other end of the phone) as though someone is in the car with me operating a pneumatic drill.

I can hear the other person clearly, just they can hardly hear me.

I'm thinking of removing it, unless anyone else has any ideas as to how I might improve the sound to the listener - other than parking and turning off the engine!

My other task is to fit a Revo in-Car DAB into the back of the Concert, and feel the aerial to it from behing the passenger A-pillar.

Sounds like the cable taking audio to the headunit is unshielded and is picking up engine noise via induction. Try replacing the wire with a known shielded piece from Maplins - it's only about 50p a metre.

Oh and BTW, DAB isn't all it's cracked up to be - I had a Blaupunkt DAB unit for a few years and the radio reception sounded great when the signal was strong, but when it weakened, it was terrible and yet when I switched onto FM, all was hunky dory. And it's not like I live in the sticks - we're talking about Greater Manchester here!

It could be the cable from the microphone to the mobile phone unit, or the unit itself not being shielded. Sound coming to me (through the Concert is really clear - that's the frustration!).

Re:DAB - I know what you mean. I planned to give it a try with the Revo Unit. I travel about 1 hour each way most days, and I fancied better Radio 5 and Sports Extra coverage on my commute. It might turn out to be crud, so I won't "fully fit" the unit until I've tested it on my journey!

If it proves to be crud, i'll stick it back on ebay!

Thanks.

Had a similar problem with my Sony blue tooth, turns out that a simple disconnect leave for a few mins then reconnect clears the problem, I've now sited mine in the passenger side kick panel below the glove box and can access in about 10 second without tools.
It would seem that it has been wired into the permanent live on the radio, I can't be arsed changing it though!

i'l be giving that a try ...

... i assume that you mean that you disconnect the Sony Ericsson control box from the power ...

I'll get it out and move it as you suggest for easier access.

I'll let you know what happens.

Took the glove box out last night. Tried all manner of re-routing cables/resetting stuff. Engine on or off, the person on the other end of the phone just hears white noise and crackling.

So, I've taken the SE HCB-300 Bluetooth car kit out, and binned it.

RNS-E with Bluetooth it is then!

Alan, it's not really a case of re-routing that would have sorted the problem, but proper shielding on the mic cable. Ideally, you would have to replace the whole run of cable and replace it with shielded wire, then make sure that at least one end, preferably both, was connected to ground.

I know you want to get the Audi bluetooth in, but I'm sure that it could have worked fine with the sony.

Cheers,

Mike

I couldn't get an improvement even with the engine and ignition off, and even when I disconnected the mic cable altogether (and others selectively). I was also concerned that this issue had just started about 2 months after the kit was installed - it hadn't been there all the time. So I decided to give up!
