Aircon & Main dealers

Owned the car for nearly 6 months now and having read lots of tales of woe on this site about main dealers I thought I should give our local guys (Eastbourne) a try out. Our Aircon was not very cold so I booked in for the Aircon service & regass, including the complimentary valet and vehicle check for £49.99.

OMG the service was way OTT. Met in the carpark as I drove in, which rainforest would I like my coffe from, what channel on the TV would sir like to watch etc, etc - I was treated like a god - BUT when it came to servicing the aircon - 'well sir we have regassed it and it doesn't work properly' - why is that I ask, surely you have scanned it to get an idea - 'I don't know sir, but if you would like to book it in we will investigate' of course forgetting to add that I would be charged £80+ per hour.

So I got the car out of there fast and arranged for Paul from Chiily Willys http://www.chillywillys.org/ to have a look at it. Before he did, I read up on the problem on this site and identified that it was either a sensor or the compressor. I carried out Skipton's recommend check and found that I could not turn the centre spindle which hopefully meant that the compressor was not dead.

Anyway Paul turned up today and checked the system and was able to confirm that there was no power at the compressor which meant that it was either a sensor or the compressor. So a scan was needed but he recommended that I take it to Audi as he had found that the fault does not always show up on some independent garages scan equipment and Audi's was by far the best with the latest software. He added that if it was a faulty copmressor then they could supply for around £280 which seems reasonable, but if it was an internal sensor then he recommended that Audi do it as it is a pig of a job. He aslo said that the ECU may well need to be reprogrammed as once the ECU senses that the compressor is not working it will stop trying to communicate with it.

So my question to the learned community here is - is the above advice correct or is there a better way of tackling the problem. Car is booked in with Audi (Brighton) next week.

I've used ChillyWillys in the past, great company :)

Can't offer any advice on your issue though, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a suggestion...

I don't know what extra fault codes Audi equipment can report that a typical VAG-COM can't. But when I took my car to a garage opened by ex-audi main dealer master technician, they had the same codes as my ebay cable. Anyhow, there are indeed a number of sensors that controls how the climate control runs the air con compressor. The power to the compressor is pulse modulated, there isn't a standing voltage to measure by typical multimeter. If your guy said there is 'no power' then it was a zero voltage? If that's the case, it is definitely the electronics, probably a dead regulator valve. But if your description of 'not very cold', then can you say if it was completely no air con, or little air con? If there is some degree of cool air compared to no cool air when ECON mode is switched on, then your climate control is probably working at limited capacity. This can be triggered by sensors reporting faulty. If you search for G263 on the site, there should be plenty of references. However, it would be a lot easier if you could just get a diagnostic scan. For what it is worth, I had a sensor reported faulty, everyone including Audi engineers recommended me to change it. I did, and proofed the sensor is fine and it was the compressor which cause incorrect readings, hence the computer thinks the sensor is faulty. Despite all these details which your guy probably didn't know, 280 for a compressor is perfectly reasonable!

Humps - Thanks for the reply. The aircon is not working at all and Paul did explain the pulse modulated voltage apparently designed to help mpg by reducing the demand on the engine for power when running. So I can confirm that there is zero power. What & where is the regulator valve?

Pugliese, unfortunately I've not reinstalled ElsaWin since McAfee sent a destructive update that crippled my PC! The regulator valve is not shown in Spike's diagram as that regulates the refrigerant circuit. I've used ElsaWin to trace the wiring from the compressor power supply to the climate control unit itself. I've even tap'ed into the pin-out at the back of the CC unit to make sure the right signal is sent (hence I knew my reported 'faulty' sensor wasn't the issue, as well I tested the sensor according to spec.). So if you have zero power to the compressor, I would suggest using ElsaWin to trace the wiring and see where the signal stopped. I would hesitate to simply replace a sensor if it was reported faulty.

You want to be lucky you don't have a 993! My A/C has a leak on it somewhere and if it's identified as the evaporator it's a 10hr job given that the fuel tank needs to come out! Despite having a DIY schedule for removal it looks challenging for what is only a £120 part!

Going in for a diagnosis next week......then will 'assess' the DIY route.

AC on all 3 A2s is fine even the 2001 although suspect it does now need a regas. Always worked on the principle its best to leave it in auto all the time.

mine was almost as bad, i was told to replace the g263 sensor, which was quoted £400+ at a good indy garage, god knows how much audi dealer would have charged to replace what was a fully working £12 temperature probe! plus eventually replacing the compressor at 475 parts + labour!

Quick update - Audi scanned and advised high pressure switch was faulty - cost £42.11 + labour inc scan £79.30 + vat = £142.66. Expensive but cheaper than a new compressor and A/C working well.:)

it is not bad, you had change from 150 notes coming out of the dealer! Glad to hear it is sorted.
