Alternative Remap Suppliers

All,

I'm looking at various options for getting my TDI 'remapped'. :)

I understand that Stealth Racing is very popular on here for remaps, and that AwesomeGTI has also been mentioned a few times. Stealth isn't too far away from me, around 2.5 hours, but it's a journey I'd like to avoid if there's a recommended supplier nearer to me. Awesome are quite close to me, but it seems they do 'generic' maps for cars now, whereas Stealth do custom maps. I'm not looking for massive power gains but improved drivability, so I'm not sure if a generic map is necessarily an issue. Does anyone have experience of AwesomeGTI maps?

On the subject of generic remaps, I've seen the folk with 1.9 engines recommend 'BlackSmoke' remaps a few times. My understanding is that these are generic maps that you install yourself, through use of a special cable. Apparently, the maps are quite conservative such that the car isn't pushed to 'the limit' as such, and hence components aren't as stressed. The added benefit for me with this is that should I need to, the map can be taken off at home easily. The negative is that as far as I know, nobody on here has tried this map. Does anyone have any experience with BlackSmoke?

Thank you in advance. :p

Regards,

Matt.

Hi Matt,

I have no answer but am in very much the same position as yourself. Stealth is the standard and anything less seems like 2nd best, but I can't justify a whole day to drive there fit and drive back.
I used a mobile service a few yrs back on a zafira 150. The guy pulled up in a van plugged in and was gone in 20min (inc egr delete) "Frank" zapfira was much inproved and went thro 3 mot's with no problems. Its an option im reconsidering but these little jem's get to you and I feel it should be given the best available!!

I bought a lead to read and write maps and im in the middle of copying Various A2 maps to compair with my own which i beleave is already remapped, not by me i might add but a former keeper as to compairing to another members car and there performance. The original reason was to obtain a remap on the cheap as couldnt justify spending £300+ pounds on a remap when theres better things to spend that kind of money on, my A2 of coarse, most A2's will be very simular and the final rolling road tweaks will only gain a few extra BHP's with a few varibles to also consider, mileage, general condition, and wear and tear on the engine and gearbox as this will suck away the horses the more worn out as such. THE MAIN THING Before remaping seems to be , have your A2 fully serviced and running at her best before a remap, Back to what im up too.. My plan was to copy as many other owners maps and compair them all and tweak my own map to be the middle of the road rather than just a straight copy of one of them, as ive got some software to pull the map apart to edit, my next search has been for some software to be able to do a on the fly remap and edit my map whilst my A2 is been driven on the road to set it up to my liking as such.. Now back to your question, why not just copy a map from someones A2 with a remap and back up your own map and overright it with theres, that way you know the maps history and its not some unkown map on the cheap remap available online ..

I've had various vehicles remapped over the years and all I can say is you get what you pay for.

I've just purchased an A2 with a stealth map and it's fantastic. My only imput would be to say make sure they're using a rolling road setup as in my experience it makes a huge difference..

An engine health check plus 'before and after' dyno runs would be an essential part of the remap process for me.
Many have commented on how much effort goes into fine tuning the initial generic map on the dyno so if funds allow it's worthwhile going to workshops with these facilities.

Cheers Spike

I'd do the drive down to Stealth - 2hrs. Get Vince to book you in first thing - 8:30am. set off at 6:15am. Back for lunch :)
Russ (3 x Stealth remaps so far...)

Thank you for the replies. :)

The general consensus seems to be that Stealth is considered the best for the A2, and that the journey is well worth doing. I'd like it to be as good as possible, so that seems like the way to go. :p

Sadly, insurance premium increases may kill off the whole project. Given my age, it seems that insurance companies would much prefer my car to be stock! :( Maybe next year! :)

Hi Matt,

Have you actually had a quote? You would be surprised at how little difference it sometimes makes.

I understand that your age makes a big difference, but it is worth checking with someone like Adrian Flux just to make sure.

Hi Steve,

I have, yes. I've used the comparison websites for reference, and adding a remap of between 11 and 25% power increase will see the annual premium rise by around £450. As such, it's not something I'll be able to justify for the time being. :)

Interestingly, I changed the quote details such to see what adding a remap would be like for next year, and the increase is much much less severe as you say! :)

When it comes to modifications I wouldn't go near a comparison site, they simply load up any modifications to the maximum.

You would almost certainly get a better quote direct from Adrian Flux or Sky insurance, or the like.

It costs nothing to ask them after all

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for letting me know. :)

Perhaps I'll be best asking my current insurer then, there is still more than 11 months left of the policy but I'm sure they'll be able to add a modification and like you say, it costs nothing to ask. :)

Thanks Steve,

Matt.

Hi Jigsaw,
How far did you get with the maps for the 1.4TDI ?
I would like to re map my 1.4TDI 55kw (75bhp), money is a little tight so the £300 remaps are simply not going to happen.
What cable and software did you buy ?

Cheers,
Paul (Depronman)

I did bye one recommended by another member , MPPS V13.02 Interface VAG USB Cable OBDII OBD2 ECU Flasher VW AUDI
and sucsesfully made a back up of my ECU , i only ever tried on 1 other members A2 TDi and we could not get it to connect to his ecu
unsure if it was because of the engine was Ka Put or the battery was low but as far as i went as found out mine had already been remapped , thow it will need doing again with a session on the rolling road id imagine at somepoint in the future when ive finished ..

Hi Jigsaw,
Thanks for the reply, sorry it as taken me a few days to get back to you (I hate summer colds)
Would you be willing to share you map, I intend to buy the cable you suggested and would be interested in seeing the difference between my A2's map which I know is standard and yours. I will of course share the results of my findings.

Does this look like the correct cable ebay listing number 221663196808

I was looking at the remaps from Awesome GTI at £150, as this seemed very good, but are they? Will take it up for 90-95bhp and I think it was 177 torque.

Anyone know others that are good in or around Chester or the Northwest?

Andy
