AMF owners - how many litres to fill up?

As thread title: For the AMF (so the small fuel tank), if you fill up when the low fuel warning light comes on, how many litres do you get in?

Only happened to me once. I drove another 30 or so miles and fitted in 32.5 litres using the vent. But the needle was still not on the R by some way - I'm fairly sure there's more than 34 litres of space in the tank.

I usually only get about 27-28 in and I tend to drive for a little while after the beep.

The most I ever got in was after a misfuelling incident where the whole tank was drained but I did it with multiple 5 litre cans and wasn’t really in the mood for keeping track - sorry.

Hi I thought there were just the two tank sizes 34litre before 2003 models and 42litre 2003 onwards I only know this many years ag we had mice chew a hole in the top of the fuel tank around one of the outlets I bought a second hand one and it was different ?..I don’t like killing mice but after that I’ve got poison bait traps around now ..☠️..

I was wanting to run some injector cleaner through mine a few months ago, so filed a 5litre can with diesel then ran the the A2 to the beep, zeroed the trip and then ran another 50 miles (the fuel needle was then on the empty side of the red), I then filled up the car and got 29 litres in (without burping it, but filled it fairly slowly)
So, I now new that fuel beep plus 50 miles = 29 litres, so I ran that tank to beep, then did a further 80 miles.
Removed the pipes from/to tank to engine, connected in slave pipes and a 1 litre jar with liqi molly in it and ran 1/2 of the liqi molly through the injectors / fuel pump. Then reconnected the tank feed and return pipes and put the remaining liqi molly into the tank. Then took the car for a spirited 20 mile drive. There was never any feeling of fuel starvation even on a twisty country road. Car back home, changed fuel filter and took it to Shell for a 33 litres of diesel.
My conclusion is that the 34 litre tank holds rather more than 34 litre of fuel even without burping it. I also now know that the fuel beep = 26 litre depending on how fast I fill it up, and that I can safely run it to 50 miles past the beep (typically if I can't find a shell fuel station or on motorway and fairly close to home)

Thanks to all. It's just that I've been a little surprised to find that I could only get 25/26 litres in if I fill up "at the beep", knowing that the tank is supposedly 34 litres. The difference (notionally a reserve of c.25% left after the warning sounds) seems a bit excessive when the tank is so small.

At least I now know that nothing's amiss. I'll try burping it at the next fill up and see what joy that brings. I'd like to have a range greater than the low-300's I'm currently returning.

Yes, from memory, ordered Aug 2002, built Oct, registered Nov. Always had a 42 litre tank. I’ll check the build date on the car later.

How do you check the Build Date? Mines a 53 Plate and has the AMF Engine and I think it has a bigger tank than my old Blue 52 Plate AMF

Hi all. Hmm you got me thinking now. I assumed my 03 tdi amf has the smaller tank. I never run my fuel down to the beep. Think I should then fill up.
Steve

The change from the 34-litre tank to the 42-litre tank was totally independent of the change from the AMF to the BHC engine.
There are plenty of AMF A2s with the 42-litre tank. All BHC A2s have the 42-litre tank.

Cheers,

Tom

I put 41 litres in my BHC last fill up. It had started misbehaving, I suspect due to starvation, (not smart) though I did brim it, must find out how to burp it.

My 2002 AMF is the 34 L I think. I normally only get 28 or 29 in and that’s me running it down to the 30 miles of range on DIS (which seems conservative).

I have once managed to get about 34L in it following a complete drain down. I can’t be sure of that figure because it involved carrying lots of 5L jerry cans full from the nearby petrol station and there wa# some spillage.

I've got two AMFs, one (April 2002) with the 34-litre tank and one (November 2002) with the 42-litre. Guess which one I'm taking to Scotland :D
