Another bmw motorcycle project ...

New project ....🤔. Bought an unfinished project originally a bmw 1994 R100R mystic that’s been butchered and mocked up into cafe racer ..☹️ I ditched most of it ..some people should never be allowed any were near an angle grinder ..😮🙄..it might of looked ok from the first picture but all loom ends yup include bar switches 😱where just cut off..frame lugs hacked off ...original bmw controls binned triumph fitted why? I’ve sourced a new loom and controls ..headlight rev counter dash and much more ..
Good points only 11k from new ..stored 14 years ..dual plugged heads ..Dyna coils..recent new stainless spoked original alloy wheels and new tyres ..tank painted vw grey white metallic one of my favourite new colours ..that’s about it ..
But I’m turning this one into a gs pd style off road bike ...So over the last couple of months I’ve been collecting together the pieces I need from Ireland Germany and further afield...I always liked the gs style high up stainless exhaust ..one of the items I’ve managed including new old stock single seat and new gs bars ..I’m doing all the trial fits now as I’ve fitted a gs rear frame and will cut and beef up main frame as the Paris Dakar ones are done ..loving this one and the two pics are what I am aiming for without the large tank ..I like the cobalt blue frame ..sending off the cylinder heads for work done by cray engineering they are the gurus on these ..fork legs rusted so complete rebuild on those inc progressive springs new internals ..keeping the r forks and not fitting the gs as dual discs more road biased same on rear as gs uses longer rear shock the r uses shorter better for the paralever flatter angle Drive shafts last longer ..
Once mock up done I will take engine out and do the jobs on that..and frame can be worked on easily on the bench it will be braced in various places ..common mod..some of you enjoyed my last project I think this is going to be my favourite out of the three..

It certainly is just over 8 gallon ...there were several designs for the Paris Dakar ..350 to 400 mile range I believe..but standard tank is 5 gallons giving 200 to 250 mile range ..

We could all do with more space for a workshop 😉 I seem to fit what I need in at least ... Modifying bikes as always been there people have done it from the Second World War onwards..in some form or guise .. Where I draw the line is on fine original examples like this one that was butchered up not many mystic or late r,s still around air cooled production ended in 95 ..plenty of tired old examples out there for modding should one wish ..👍 I did it myself with my first bobber but that was an ex police bike with high miles that was partially started ..

I'm guessing it has baffles to minimise slop, 8 gallons is around 25 kgs (1 ltr approx 0.75 kg). Wouldn't want that moving much when airborne over a sand dune!

Morning Paul,

Looking very clean there Sir. I love your attention to detail. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing right.

Waiting in anticipation for final pictures of this one.

Kind regards,

Tom

I'm just starting on something similar for an old Ducati. One fork leg needs rechroming (will be using Philpots) plus I have a heap of stuff that needs blasting, coating, painting and some chroming. I can do basic blasting myself, but fortunately there is a vapour blasting business a few hundred yards away so I have to have a chat with them.

Wow! Love the way the Bing carbs have come up. They look amazing; certainly better than new!

Oops hi folks forgot some pics ..A lot of the work on the frame you can’t see now ..I’ve beefed up put webs in different places as it was on the Paris Dakar HPN model ..got frame back from powdercoaters last Friday cobalt blue 🤗 I’m really enjoying this one my favourite out of the three without a doubt . Everything has either been rebuilt as new or is new Side panels will be silver along with a high front mudguard ..Exhaust cover will be satin black .. a few small parts that vibrant KTM orange ..basically I’m blending a late model R into a GS style best of both worlds..I’m waiting on a dash from Germany December delivery as I wanted it black hard anodised .. I will look so much nicer than the plastic afterthought on this last model R air cooled ..

Change of colour scheme ..cobalt blue and ktm orange ...just waiting on the tank (last pic example) will be cobalt blue with white circle and 68 my age once this finished in a few weeks .. Had the exhaust cover laser cut out in stainless..fitted stainless side stand..added some voight bar risers it lifted bars 30 mm and back 25mm makes for a nicer upright riding position. . Instrument panel worked out really well ..small screen ordered up ..Throttle cables and choke cables Ordered along with twin plugs and leads.. Hopefully end of this month I can add a couple of finish pictures..👍

you have been adventurous with the colours.

I bought a new BMW back in 2010, I was offered 7/8 colours, I thought this should be interesting only to be told its 7/8 shades of grey.

My Grey bike is currently with the insurers, I locked a fox in my garage for one night, totally destroyed 2 bikes and anything else that was chewable.
The insurers have wrote the BMW off, just trying to buy the bike back now.

Insurance companies might offer a cheap price, but, useless when you need to use them.

Good Luck with the build, any nut and bolt restoration looks brilliant in my opinion.

Wow 😱 I bet the fox was knackered after a night of chewing that lot... Part of my reasoning for the KTM orange was I like to be seen By car drivers 🤗👀 I’m hoping they’re going to miss this one...literally 🥳. 🤣😂
Good luck buying your bike back I hope it works out for you ..👍 I can be subtle the other two I restored are ..that colour was a one year only I turned tge rt to S yes wheels we’re silver from factory but gold suits that style of wheel ..

Gorgeous bike, the gold wheels fit perfectly matching the pinstripe.

Have you got the panniers for it? I am a sucker for panniers and plenty of fairings.

Yes I have got the panniers stored away .. The only original bit of paint is the front mudguard a good friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous painted the panels and the stripes and he did those pinstripes by hand and they’re better than BMWs Factory ladies that did them .. I had to wait months but he is a True perfectionist..retired .

Finnished electrics and cables ..just the fluids and bleed front brakes …tank could be weeks away as I’m waiting on painter ..he’s the best at what he does so I’m not bothered as it won’t be used until spring ..so looking forward to riding this one ..two to put on the road and not yet ridden what’s next …maybe a Paris dakar 👀..

Better than factory. Awesome work, hope you are in good health sir. How's the A2 Fleet doing? Any pics?
Hello my friend thanks …still waiting on the fuel tank from painter ☹️ ..and still have the same old 3 a2s my old winter hack now just turned 170k I love the heated seats and cruise control on this one no rear seat blanket in the back so the dog can just jump straight in and out in the mornings it’s nice to have a car where you don’t have to worry what it looks like..🫣..
