...all that to be done ASAP
You wouldn't be the first person to take this attitude. I've had countless A2s arrive at mine immediately after purchase, before the new owner has even taken the car home. I'm just off M6 junction 34, about an hour south of Gretna, so often work my magic on A2s bound for Scotland.

Any thoughts on powerflex bushes?
There are mixed reports. Some people really like them, but they're known to get squeaky after a while, which can be really annoying.

Cheers,

Tom

@timmus
Tom that’s a very informative
Write up on the 6 spd swap.
I see the 6spd setup is £1250 Plus postage
quite a cost plus fitting.
I know that i really need to purchase a car and take it from there.

Question
Given the age of the A2 would it be wiser to pick up a used gearbox and have it rebuilt with the additional 6 spd
Obviously the issue would be what has the box been through beforehand

That is unquestionably the place to start. Get yourself the best A2 as possible for your needs/desires, and take it from there. I offer retrofitting of every optional extra with the exception of OpenSky and climate control. You also cannot install 5 seats in a 4-seater A2, or 4 seats in a 5-seater A2. Beyond that, the world is your oyster and you can make whatever changes/additions you want.

You've hit the nail on the head. It all depends on how much confidence you have in the car's existing gearbox, vs. how much confidence you have in a gearbox you've purchased on the open market.

As you'll have seen in my 6-speed write-up, I used my car's existing gearbox, but had it thoroughly reconditioned at the same time, with new bearings, an uprated open differential, and a few new synchro rings.

Cheers,

Tom

Only me, but I prioritise stopping quickly when on the move, over handbrake efficiency. If the handbrake is a concern, leave the car in gear when parked.
Mac.

Tom,
I have no interest in Opensky
to me it’s just one more thing to go wrong.
Not fussed about climate control.
I appreciate the information and potential
A2 upgrade source.

Adam

If you look on the Tdi Spotted thread, you'll see a recently spotted Tdi 90 that appears to have been well maintained and might be of interest to you. That's listed at £2,750.

I have a rather special Tdi coming up for sale. Silver, no OSS, red leather, 4 seats, and lots more.....
