Another suspension question!

I’ve just found Monroe shocks for £28 each so I’m replacing the rear shocks now... since I’ll be in there anyway... kind of defeating my own point but AUTODOC had a sale on.

Hi Peeps, I need to change front shocks on my little runaround for its MOT. My one has non working OSS so what parts would be ideal for my one please????

I need the springs and mounts to go with it?

Not necessarily. Unless your springs are obviously corroded or broken, you don't need to replace them. If your current springs are sound, then likely the top mounts are too.

While that's being done, if you haven't already thought of doing so, drop links and anti-roll-bar bushes can be done at the same time. Have had to do these on all three of our A2s - a couple were making knocking noises over road joints so it was a no-brainer. We've got B4s at both ends of all the A2s, and did the top mounts with all of them as well.

Nearly 20 year old so definitely needs refresh no?

Absolutely if You’re going all the trouble of taking the top mounts and springs off anyway to do the shocks you just want to do the whole lot that’s false economy is it not ...it’s quite labour intensive unlike the rear ., I’ve done this on two of our 3 off a2 front and rear and using bilstein b4 and b3 springs meyle top mounts and drop links and febi buffers (bumpstops) and belows for top of struts .

The springs at least have more often than not been replaced already. If they're nearly 20 years old they will likely have a significant layer of rust.

It's difficult to predict longevity with springs. My own A2 has a comprehensive service history, back to new. The nearside front spring has been replaced 5 times, but the offside front spring only once (at 19 years old).

How many miles has yours done steve ..n/s 5 times wow ? ..more often than not ours has been same side i’ve put it down to the terrible roads out in the sticks where we live... near side always gets a hammering with potholes generally caused by the huge tractors that now use our lanes No longer a little Grey Fergie ...?

76k, Paul. I renewed the shocks, wishbones (with their rubber bushes) and drop links last service, as well as replacing that O/S broken spring. The spring actually broke as I set off to get the suspension sorted! It runs like it's on rails now.
