Another TDI90 limp mode sufferer

Can anyone confirm if a faulty G40 Camshaft position sensor (or connection) could be the likely culprit for the engine knocking sound which has just developed?

Code from November was as follows (although no problems heard or felt until last weekend);

- 19463 CAM Position Sensor - G40 No Signal P3007 - Intermittent

It's an ATL TDI90...

It is highly unlikely.

Is the engine running sweetly or rough.
If rough the timing of the cambelt might be out and it might have been ok before you retimed it? Is that possible?

Yeah starting okay and running smoothly in terms of tick over speed, no erratic idling and not cutting out.

It's the knocking sound I have from the top of the engine that puzzles me, the noise started once the engine had ran for a few minutes on Sunday, but now its just there straight away on start up so concerns me a little bit? Reluctant to test drive (since fitting intercooler) or drive to a garage for this reason.

The only things I did last weekend were;

- reconnect MAF, previously disconnected for fault finding
- cleared the engine light/codes as peviously mentioned
- fitted the new intercooler
- changed gearbox oil

... I didn't touch the timing etc.

I currently have no engine warning lights which is good but doesn't help with diagnosis of the knocking sound!

Firstly eliminate the easy things.

Listen fir the sound and then depress the clutch. This is just to eliminate that as a cause (sounds can be deceiving)
If that makes no difference, try the “wooden stethoscope method”. Get a piece of wood that is about two foot long and only a couple of inches wide and press one end firmly ont different parts of the engine. Put the other end firmly against your ear. That should help you locate the source.
Let us know how that goes.

So I've had chance to delve a bit deeper on this one. Firstly I thought I'd get the car running and see what was going on with the new noise that had developed out of nowhere. Once the car had been running a few minutes it started to fade away came and went a couple of times and then it pretty much disappeared once I'd rolled the car out of the garage, so I felt happier about testing the car and seeing what was what now I'd replaced the intercooler and cleared the errors. No luck however...

The car runs and drives but there is no action at all from the turbo, it was like it was still in limp mode, really down on power obviously. So it went back into my garage and back on the axle stands. Finally I thought I'd take a last look at the VNT actuator and confirm if the lack of movement in the arm was due to that or the turbo itself... the actuator seems okay, the VNT arm on the turbo is stuck in the down position, so that's where I'm at now. DOH! :confused:

As mentioned in the first post, the current turbo was brand new approx 57K miles ago and the car is pretty well cared for so really surprised it's jammed up on fairly low miles.

Now I'm looking at my options to get the car to a recommended A2 tinkerer to see what needs to be done to get it fixed and back in the fast lane, really gutted as the car has recently had a bunch of new expensive and modified parts fitted including complete brake overhaul, KW coilovers and alloy intercooler so I really hope it's not anything too major to fix. Niggling in the back of my brain is also the unusual engine sound I had, I really hope everything that is meant to be inside the turbo is still in there!!

I'm based in Coventry but I'm considering trailering the car to a specialist wherever that may be within a few hours drive, happy to accept any recommendations on garages and experienced individuals who might be able to help me out!

like i said in my earlier post
its turbo remove strip and clean (you most likely will NOT need a new one)
if your supplied with a new one at a garage Keep the old one and i will strip and check it for you
low miles is sometimes a bad thing for small VV turbos
and its not an easy job on the 90 its quite involved

Cheers Steve, yes I think it's WOM I'll be going to see, I'll get an email off to them today and then make a call to see what the diary is like...

Yes you did indeed call it correctly, I was hoping it wouldn't be the case!!
When I said low miles on the turbo of 57K, that's 57K in the last 4 years only so it's not really been sat or doing short journeys... it's one of the reasons I bought the car because the turbo had been replaced so I thought I was in the clear!
Thanks for offering to look at the turbo for me, we'll see what the professional diagnosis is and go from there.
