Any A2 specialists left?

Hi All,

I know there used to be a chap in Skipton who had a garage specialising in the A2, and I remember A2 Cars near Milton Keynes, I think? But I don't think either of these is still operating now?

The reason for my question is that I'm thinking of giving my lovely 130,000 mile A2 TDi90 Sport a bit of a makeover, and she also needs a gearbox rebuild. I normally get servicing and repairs done by Awesome GTi, who are reasonably local to me, but they're more into tuning and modifications, and I don't think they're as clued up about the A2's little peccadilloes as a true specialist would be. I want some advice about what work I should be contemplating, aside from the gearbox. I'm likely to be retiring her from daily driver duties, which means I can lay her up for a bit.

I'm not a natural DIY-er when it comes to cars, so wouldn't really enjoy tackling the work myself. I realise a statement like that could get me drummed out of the club, so I just hope my 15 years of A2 ownership will act in mitigation!

Good afternoon,

In order, you are thinking of Mike Hill @Skipton, he no longer dabbles in upgrades and maintenance for members but does have his very prized A2 Tank still in his possession. He is an active part of the team. Sadly, Tony of A2Cars, passed away a few years ago and the business ceased trading.

As others have said, WOM Automotive are A2 specialist in Stoke-on-Trent. Rob and Marcus will give your A2 a quality service and you are safe in the knowledge that they care about their customers and know the A2 inside and out. Link to WOM’s website. Rob is also a member on here: @chumsofmanutd

Afternoon,

Not that Marcus and Rob @chumsofmanutd at WOM Automotive need further recommendations but I’m another very happy returning customer of theirs.

They are both really good guys and their knowledge on the A2 is total. I have dropped in there unannounced on occasions for them to investigate niggles that I noticed and Marcus quickly diagnoses faults and repairs them whilst I wait if possible. He even welded up my exhaust when he noticed a slight blow was actually a large hole.

They also completed my MYP conversion which I’m still enjoying seeing how far I can get on a tank whilst commuting.

For me it’s WOM Automotive every time.

Kind regards,

Tom

Booked in for the 6-speed conversion at WOM later this month. Picked up a nice gearbox (well, I hope it’s nice) from eBay and collected that this morning. Looking forward to finding out what difference it makes. Any thoughts as to what I should expect?

Thinking about a Stealth remap, or possibly an Awesome remap as the next step.

My thoughts on what you should expect from the MYP box based on what I found with mine are (apologies for any statements of the bleedin’ obvious): much quieter cruising at motorway speeds; short-throw, fairly heavy gear change; barely noticeable difference in revs-speed in gears 1 to 5, imperceptible change in fuel consumption (possibly up to 5% saving, but other factors such as driving style and headwinds have a greater effect). Also, 6th is only comfortably usable above 55-60mph, depending on terrain. This MYP was one of the best things I’ve done to mine, since much of my driving is long-distance motorway stuff. You’ll never regret it.
Mine has a Stealth re-map too (done by previous owner) and the engine & box work very nicely together.
Good luck,
Mike

We were very pleased with Rob and Marcus at WOM Automotive when we took our A2 there for a New Clutch last year. We were going to take there this month to get the Emissions sorted out for the MOT Test but it is about a 2 hour drive each way. Asked on A2OC for other recommendations. Members came up with Nobles Garage at Langwathby. Not too far from us. Then Micks Garage at Kirkby Lonsdale like on our doorstep 20 minutes along the A65. We took it there. They fitted a good used Genuine Audi Manifold Catalytic Converter that we bought from Depronman ( Paul ). It brought the Emissions down but not low enough. They Diagnosed a Faulty Lambda Probe. Fitted a new one. Passed the MOT Test with no other work required. Micks Garage are not an A2 Specialist but they do specialise in German Cars, including Classics. They only charge £40 for the MOT Test. Advertise £40 + VAT for a Full Air Con Service. I think we will be going there again.

Thanks, that’s all very useful stuff and does firm up my resolve for the Stealth remap at some point.

As a Tdi90 mine already has noticeably taller ratios in 4th and 5th, and these will be shorter with the new box. That might mean I can use 4th for 30mph limits, rather than 3rd as I do now, and 5th for 45mph+ rather than 50+, perhaps? One thing I will lose, which has the slightly OCD bit of me twitching a little bit, is that when cruising on the motorway, the Speedo and tacho needles will no longer be aligned!

Yes, again depending on terrain, I use 4th for 30 mph limits and 5th for 40 mph. The engine's revving fairly slowly at those speeds but if the load is light, it's fine. It's not going to accelerate like a dragster from those conditions, but that's what the lower ratios are for.

For anything Electrical / Electronic of course it’s Timmus ( Tom ) of course !

He does not do Mechanical Stuff, and he only works on the A2. Nothing else.

Interesting, the PTW box in Audrey has noticeably taller gears 1-4 than the other six speed boxes and 30 mph is 1800 rpm in 3rd which is great. I don’t change to 4th until I’m up to around 37-40 mph as otherwise the revs drop to 1600 rpm or below and I worry about the DMF even at very light / cruising throttle at that point or below.

I can compare better when I get Akoya - which has a MYP fitted - home later this month. I will report in the MYP thread.

I maybe wrong but when I did my MYP box on a 90 it was not noticeable 5th gear revs the same. Also not all MYP boxes have the same ratios. The first one I had did 70mph at 2200rpm… this box died … the second did 70 @ 2000rpm
