Any way to improve radio reception

Hi folks,

My new stereo is in and working, but I don't feel the radio reception is that great.

At the moment the square antenna connection has been used, but not the standard connector (connected up by halfords).

Drove across the country yesterday (Stamford to Milford Haven) and didn't have much joy finding radio stations. I'll do a bit more objective testing when I get back home against my portable fm radio.

In the meantime does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve reception? Also is it normal for an after market stereo to only make use of the one connection?

To clarify, I did find some stations, but not in areas where I know I've had reception before
