Anyone here own a Mk2 Golf gti?

You are a brave man if you take that on. I hope it is (very) cheap.

Nearest I came with a Mk 2 was a nice J reg GTD. That was pretty quick back in the day.

I paid £11k for her at 1 year old in 1992. New, she was about £14k.
Mine was £11k new in 89, discounted to £10 with free a mats and flaps. I still have the mats and flaps.
I’m surprised though how much they are going for now. I thought they had become a bit of a cult car, bought for modification and customising. I suppose though that makes an original one rarer and that will push prices up.

I'm surprised at how nuch is available for this car, and at stupidly cheap prices.

Just visiting to say exactly that. Ive given mine a mechanical overhaul, actually it’s still work in progress, I’ve been able to get every thing I need at reasonable prices. The only exception was a rear wheel bearing splash shield but I did get the abs version.
Restoration costs are in the bodywork and paint.

Came across your post, Vw golf in my opinion is the best golf but thats my opinion, I've had my Oak Green small bumper mk2 Golf for 21 years, it was a 1.8 16v then i changed it to 2.0 16v and 14 years ago i changed it to a 20v turbo, its tax and used every year.

That looks very nice. Something about the simplicity of the shape that is really attractive.

I must say, I have found it to be one of the most reliable is cars I’ve ever had. Hope you enjoy your wine as much as I’ve enjoyed mine over the years.

When/if i get it on the road i will let you know. Really hoping i can save it. Althugh it is an 8v and in pretty standard form. There is something special about the mk1 and mk2 golf gti's that sadly, IMO was lost on the later models.

No longer I’m afraid, but once had an ‘85 8v with GTi Engineering conversion to about 140 bhp, it was a bit tired by the time I got it but still excellent, p/exd it for what must have been one of the very last 8v Mk IIs, a ‘92 K reg, also once had an ‘87 E reg Jetta GTi 16v

Isolate the main pump until the lift pump delivers fuel. If the main pump has no fuel it will fail.
could you let us know how you get on importing from the EU. I’ve been avoiding it until I understand the customs charges.

Just giving this one a nudge, as I came across a pic of our old Mk2 16v ...... long since sold on, but was a great car in that really nice colour - can't remember what it was called though !!
Went on to have a few 205 GTi's & Cti's & also an Mk3 VR6 - great in a straight line, but a bit clumsy round corners & always seemed to need to be at a fuel pump !!
Hope you get yours back to an 'as new' condition soon !!

Yes, the sun does shine here, every now & then !!

Not a Mk2 GTi but a standard Mk2 1.6 Ryder. I bought it in poverty 20 years ago for about £200 not expecting anything, except a boring family mobile. Then one day driving it I realised.
"I like driving this, I like pushing it through the corners, I like the grunt from the engine."
Went on to get another one in better condition.

How are you getting on with the restoration?

How are you getting on with the restoration?
Very slow at mo. Battery tray done, front slam panel and engine compartment all back together. Cut out rot in tyre well and rear inner arches, removed and stripped rear axle for powder coating. Prepped and painted auxiliary parts off rear axle ready to reassemble. Ditching mk2 rear calipers in favour of used working and a lot more reliable mk4 golf ones. Rapidly running out of room in my garage!

Cars take an amazing amount of room up during restoration. Even worse when they have a separate chassis.

Don't they just. All those bits you took off/out of it that fit so neatly together on/in the car, do not stack, tesselate or fit in to convenient corners in your storage space - which for many will be the same space which they also need the rest of the car still to occupy - in any way, shape or form. I bet our resident breakers dread the thought of common failures in large-sized parts, as keeping stocks will be a nightmare.

It's getting there. starting to look like a Golf again. Once all rear metal work and paint is sorted, axle/suspension/fuel tank back in place, i can then start engine do an oil service and coolant purge. Then i will start to tackle both front floor sections.
