Are all Audi 15" Pepperpots forged?

I'm looking to buy some Pepperpots. Are all Audi 15" forged or were the A2 pepperpots special?

Actually they're A3 Pepperpots, there's no A2 equivalent. My understanding is that they are cast rather than forged.

I'm pretty sure pepperpots are forged. This is one of the mysteries why Audi used such a basic design but specced them so high....

There are forged 15" wheels on the A2, but not exactly pepperpots. The holes are triangular, not round.

I will have a set of these for sale shortly complete with usable winter tyres and centre caps for a bargain price ..the lacquer Finnish has broken down but nice straight wheels ..? £120 I will post in for sale weekend with pics .

Best guess is that although the initial tooling cost is high, overall the cost of manufacture is cheaper for high volume parts - which probably applies to the A2s 15" alloys and the pepperpots used on A3s (and other models)

If that were true, Audi's standard wheel designs would all be forged, rather than cast, but of course it's quite the reverse. I have a set of A3 Pepperpots, and I struggle to see any evidence whatever that they might be forged. Rather, they have all the characteristics of cast wheels, as do those A2 15" seven-spoke wheels.

Should have added 'simple design' which minimises the need for more complex machining / finishing. The ' lighter / stronger' properties of forged alloys don't seem to merit their use on entry level models so the only logic I could see was cost.

The original Audi A2 price lists (page 8) specify the standard equipment wheels as -
''5.5J x 15 lightweight forged aluminium alloy wheels'' - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/uk-pricelist-january-2005.3463/post-28043
As for characteristics of forged alloys, the things I noticed are the very smooth finish and lack of cast 'pockets' on the back of the spokes which usually contain the cast in part numbers etc, all the info being stamped .
I've not seen a Pepperpot so can't comment on their design

I've got some highly polished Pepperpots fitted. The complete wheel is polished and the finish is absolutely superb! You still notice the internal polished surfaces through the Pepperpot holes! Another characteristic of these wheels is their obvious lightness .... I am not sure as to how that is of benefit, though?

Hi Steve, would you to expand on this and which characteristics you see in these wheel, I have 3 sets and they look very forged to me, especially when they have been stripped.

Hi all.
I just went outside and took a photo of one of my Pepperpots I recently was given for free, sorry for the bad appearance they are meant as winter wheels.
"Geschmiedet" is german for forged I believe.

Hi Joga
Thanks for taking the trouble to photograph a Pepperpot. I'd never have worked out the German word for 'forged'

Cheers Spike
