Article: 1.2 & 1.4 TDi engines - Design and Function

Fantastic finds. Takes a bit of reading but makes everything clearer.
The document ssp253_fsi med7 in the above link covers the introduction of the original FSI engine in 2002.
It reminded me that the original reason for using Shell Optimax was the low sulphur content (as well as high octane rating). The lower sulphur content means less need to refresh the catalytic converter (refreshing ^ fuel consumption). It may be that legislation has moved on, and generally fuel has less sulphur nowadays.
 
The rotten egg smell from catalyst petrol exhausts seems to have completely disappeared I'm the last few years so I guess that is due to lower sulphur fuels across the board?
