ashtray broken, anyone help ?

hi there to all, ive owned my a2 04 tdi for three weeks now and love it, anyway the ash tray does not spring out ive had a look at it, i noticed there is a metal coil spring at the back that isnt attached to anyting, carnt see what this attaches to to make the tray spring out, can anyone help me to fix this, thankyou. steve,

Hi Steve and welcome,

The ashtray is easily broken I'm afraid, and the spring does tend to pop out from it's retainer, which is under the lid and is basically a couple of slits into which one end is anchored.

To fix it, you'll need to remove the assembly and invert it, then, using a pair of radio pliers, pull the free end ito the slits.

If the locating pin is broken (which again, is easily done), you'll see that once the spring is in place, the tray won't stay closed!
