AUA fails to proceed.

Morning all,

quick one that I'm sure is reasonably simple. My other half's AUA didn't start this morning - usual drill ; get into car, turn on headlights, and radio. Wait for air-con to start up while doing make-up in mirror, then try to start. I realised pretty quickly that it didn't sound right after a couple of seconds - so another three attempts to start were made by the time I could get out to the drive. Strong smell of petrol around exhaust area. A verbal V5 exchange was made, so I then handed over the keys to my BHC car so she could head to work, and then took possession of the car I had just been returned ownership of (until I've got it working again).

I'm reasonably certain the engine is flooded and that the battery was probably a wee bit low yesterday (not having been used properly since Thursday) and could have done with a good drive. I tried starting once using the big emergency battery in case that was able to get enough of a spark to clear the cylinders, and although the engine spun fine, no firing. There are no errors in the diagnostics. In an ideal world I would have time to remove the plugs and leave it for a few hours to dry out and try again, but I need to leave for work right now, having put the trickle charger on to try to get some juice in during the day.

Any other thoughts appreciated. Best, Robin

A VCDS scan as always would be the first thing to do. Checking all fuses and earths, even running a spare earth between the block and chassis, if you do not already have one.

Clean throttle body if no codes show.

take the spark plugs out and warm them up in the oven but clean them first
the fuel in the cylinders shud evaporate..
plugs back in now Hot , it shud start ok with a good battery..
this worked for my sister..

I'd consider tightening those plugs a little once they are cold

I think ours was one of the later AUAs - 52 reg. BBY with the individual coil packs started with ~03 plate cars? Pitch black outside, no chance to have a crack at the plugs. Will leave the charger on overnight and hope it is light enough in the morning for me to fetch them out.

Thank you all for your suggestions - will come back once I've got an answer.

Several of the changes the A2 experienced was for the 2003 model year cars. These cars have been talked about by some as the Mk2.

Cleaned plugs. Found the plug in cylinder 1 (going 1-4 from driver side to passenger side) was very oily - which explains the occasional puff of smoke on starting recently. After putting it all back together start took a few turns and then gradually all 4 cylinders came to life. I think it was just the battery being a bit low and the engine getting flooded last week.
