Ok have an itch to see how light I can make an na 1.4 a2 and also improve upon the engines performance with inlet tb and ecu.

Years ago (2016)what got me into a2s was this 400 quid tdi90 with a bent chassis
Tried as I might I couldn’t get it bellow 950kgs after some extreme weight saving
It had the same legs as a golf gtd

In hindsight I think this will be much quicker..
Would be happy with 110-115 Shetland pony’s. But I think this will get to 135-140 once I’m done. (All on the cheep)

Picked this up yesterday for 500… an early y plate with no ac.
Plan is to get this down to 780-800kgs

This morning took it to a local weight bridge and it was 1016kgs with an empty tank running on fumes and me in it.
I’m 73 kilos

So that puts us at 943kilos. An ok base. And incidentally lighter already then a! Aggressively stripped out tdi90.

Engines nice and tight with 71k miles.. forgot how pointy these are to direction changes compared to a tdi.. really notice the difference chucking it into corners.

Loving the experience so far

I think 800kg is possible or very close under it

Will update In due course
Wheels are for sale if anyone’s looking for 17” rs 9 spokes.

I've been talking to @enzo offline about this, and as soon as I manage to pass on my low mileage 1.4 petrol (see A2oc marketplace) I'll be entering the 'fight' with a featherweight entry of my own!

I'm sure @enzo won't might me adding bits to his thread as I go in the 'rounds'. DIng ding.

Running it without wheels to save weight is a bit extreme and could impact on straight-line performance. Is there anything else you can remove beforehand?

Fair point. Might also delete the driver, 73kg saved and zero cornering mistakes.

Wheels are just unsprung excuses. Real gains come from spiritual weight loss.

Waiting in anticipation,
I think this will be a good fight 🤣😂

Getting rid of those very heavy wheels it a good place to start.
They weight a ton (not literally!)

Oem 17" 7jj rs4 alloys are 8.7kg, replica rs4 of the same size 11.4kg. So 45.6kg of alloys on there atm!

Lightweight alloys range from 15" 5kg - 17" 8kg, so anywhere 25kg - 15kg saving straight off! May pitch it at 20kg saving to account for larger tyres if rims smaller.

Ok started weighing parts

All seatbelts buckles and all seat brackets along with bolts 4.6kg
Large rear boot side arche 1.57kg left
Large rear boot side arch right 1.65kg
Trim panels around gearstick and handbrake 2.6kg
Boot floor 2.1kg
Rear single seat left 16kg
Rear single seat right 16kg
Miscellaneous bits(jack, wheel key. Sound deadening) 4kg

That totals 48.52kg for this lot

So dipped under 900 now specifically 894kgs.

So this thing didn’t come with our issues

I now understand how sensitive the ignitions system is on this

The previous owner got new leads plugs and distributer

So blasted this up the road from stoke about 250 miles at full chat and it was totaly fine

Iv had it for a few days and done maybe 1500 miles in it with a trip to Newcastle also

And the ignitions all over the place.

Did a compression test today and all cylinders are healthy

But I put some 99 Ron in t a few days ago and it totaly didn’t like it.. misfiring slowly getting better after putting a more trusted source of 95

I’m putting it down to contaminated fuel right now.

Just about to fit some wheels tomight will also weigh and document to see how much comes off the total

Contender 2 (sort of):

Unlike @enzo 's amazing efforts and simply lightspeed progress. My progress is somewhat more leisurely.

Hare and tortoise 🐢 comes to mind. I've got to sell one a2 before I purchase another (strict). In the meantime I've been adding weight in parts in readiness (albeit not too much).
Parts that will go on the new addition once it arrives...

16" 7jj Volk Rays SE37K 5.0kg a piece!
Alloy and tyre pair combo weighed with 16" Michelin PS3 Sports 205s as 13.5kg.

Sparco Rev Plus seats (fibreglass). 7.1kg each, 6.5kg each excl padding.

JOM Blueline coilovers

JOM adjustable droplinks and front strut mounts

Took another 39 kilos out today
Fitt d some d2 a8 winter wheels

Taking 20 kilos off the unsprung mass

So the rs9 spokes were 20 kilos a corner
And the new rolling stock 15
If I went to pepper pots with low profiled could probably loose anothet 20.. good to know that’s there If I’m chasing a figure

This has been the far most notible increase in performance

Also removed the passenger seat at 19.5 kilos

So at the end of today 39.5kgs lighter

So new weight 854.5kgs

sorta got the bug with this

So aub ecu has arrived.. will send it to deproman once he’s back from holiday
Also have a larger Megan throttle body and lupo gti inlet

Yesterday I managed to find a 1998 lupo e manual rack for 60 quid
It’s a quicker rack lock to lock and should also help me shed another 10-12kgs by junking the pas pump, plumbing and reservoir.

Thinking with the idea of sending away the inlet cam I have on another aua block away to piper to reprofile..

This is a cancer 😅

I think I would have looked for a smaller battery rather than removing seatbelt buckles. Call me old fashioned.

Could I suggest the replacement of all side glass and if possible rear screen with plastic, along with the removal of all 4 complete window regulators/wiring. This would be quite a large saving in Kgs, the rear screen replacement itself would be a big saving of a few Kgs. Glass is so Bl***y heavy! And it will all help to lower the car's overall centre of gravity and front & rear polar moments of inertia. Thereby improving lateral grip and rate of change of direction of the vehicle. I take it that all non required internal trims, door panels and rear seats will be removed in your quest to make the "lightest" A2 possible. I think a sub 800 Kgs total weight should be quite easy to achieve. After all a "all steel" basic old BMC Mini 850 with 2 "steel" subframes was about some 600 KGs ex factory in the early 1960s. Would love to see how near to that you could get, or maybe even beat. Anyway at some 800 Kgs or so it will be quick, as you will be knocking on the door of some 140+BHP per ton. Good luck!
