Information Audi A2 3L - Bought as non-runner...

Hi Alan,

The website also states that the arms would fit a 1.2Tdi. That may well be true but I would be very dubious tnat they would also fit a 1.4Tdi (as they claim).

Update... I've now put the car on a new set of 145R14 Continental Winter tyres. I'm amazed how much grip there is. The car was good even on summer tyres in the snow/ice but it doesn't even spin a wheel :)

These are on my spare set of Mag alloys.

I've removed the wheel trims for the moment while the grit is down but have another set coming over from Germany. The idea will be to have the best set for summer and the not so great set for winter but I'll lacquer them before they go on in an attempt to look after the aluminium.

Economy and performance have taken a bit of a dip on these tyres although I'm running them at the suggested factory pressures of 2.5 barg and 2.3barg. Now that we're not in ice and snow... I'll probably run them higher.

Running update:

Fuel economy on a run at 90kph (55mph) is over 100mpg.

Fuel economy around town is another matter... around 60mpg :( But this is only since I put the winter tyres on so I'm hoping that a lot of that is down to the tyres. We'll see over time I guess. The Lupo 3L is better around town on fuel but it's lighter and has slightly smaller tyres - meaning that the gearing is lower.

My second set of wheel trims have arrived from Germany and they're largely in better condition than my original set, so I'll probably swap over some parts between them to make up a summer and winter set and then they can go on.

20171219_134819_zpsl8reirtx.jpg

Before I do that however, the wheels currently on the Lupo 3L have had wheel trims fitted before and so are scratched where the wheel trim fixings sit. The set that are on the A2 now have no damage at all, so I'll swap the tyres over putting the good set on the Lupo 3L ready for sale.

In deciding to use the Recaro leather seats that I've had in my Lupo 3L into the A2 3L, I had to find replacements for the Lupo!... so here they are.

Black recaros which are going into the A2 3L...

20171219_134915_zpswzg0icxz.jpg

And the new ones for the Lupo 3L ;)

20171219_172306_zpsfptxwojo.jpg

The black leather seats are in the loft - safe from Child seats etc!

Now all I need for the A2 3L is a set of black leather rears and door cards... oh and some modifying time to get the Recaros into the A2. They're far from a bolt in :(

Other things to do... I've narrowed the wheel bearing noise to the right rear and the service history confirms that that is the only wheel bearing that hasn't been changed so far.

I've carried out a service and will be changing the timing belt (with all rollers, water pump etc) once all of the parts arrive from TPS.

Oh, having cured the vibration from the engine (still can't believe it was the track rods but hey you live and learn) I now have a knocking on both sides from the suspension. I've double checked and there's no play in the suspension either side so I'm looking at potentially the anti-roll bar drop links or strut top mounts although they were done not so long ago.

I bought some drop links of eBay and they were knocking before A2 had done 50 miles. They were cheap but crap. Bought some HD Miele ones and been knock free since

I might see how much genuine are. If they're not silly money it'll be worth it as the car's a keeper.

I have a new rear wheel bearing en route!

I understand that the Miele HD ones are as good if not better than Audi originals

I have some Febi drop links coming. They are 3L only so there isn't an option for HD and the original equipment is expensive and on back-order. I hope to have these between Christmas and New Year.

Running a car everyday in this weather isn't easy to keep clean ;)

I'll give it a wash tomorrow after the work Christmas dinner :)

Audi never offered any centre caps for the Mag alloys on the A2 3L because of the wheel trims. As I'll be running them without now and again, I thought that it would be nice to have the Audi logo centres. However, there aren't any that fit straight away so I'm modifying some to fit and look OE. It's the little things ;)

Before

After (I need to position them a little more carefully)

Neither of my 3Ls (Lupo or A2) ever came with front fog lights.

In the Lupo, I bought some aftermarket lights, fitted them with LED replacement bulbs and wired them up as DRLs.

With the A2, I'd like to have front fog lights and DRLs so I've grabbed some of these from ebay.

I need a pair of front fog light surrounds... so if anyone has some spare please let me know!

I love the idea of fitting a modern light switch controller with 'Auto' and 'Coming Home' functions. We'll see what happens. I'm still reading up about it.

you are going down the same route that I did some months ago. I bought the exact same light units from ebay
I had an old A2 Fog light which the chrome had badly corroded, so I chain drilled to remove the main bulb holder and then cleaned it up with a dremmel. There is a ring in the original casting that you use as a guide. This is a few mm to large for the body of the DRL's that you have bought and also is not in the centre.
I got around this by 3D printing a offset spacer, this all worked out well and allows the DRL to be mounted. The glass from the original fog light will still fit back in place and cover the new DRL
So, all is well so far, then I discovered that the original fog light as a very defined beam pattern, however the DRL as no beam pattern, it is just a ball of light (very bright light). This is where I have got to (well actually I got to this point about 6 months ago) and got no further
I had an idea about 3D printing a 1/4 ball cover to partially cover the angel eye in the hope that this will provide a beam pattern, just never got to it

I have also fitted the auto headlight switch and this work very well I leave it in the 'auto' position all the time, it works that well
I have 55watt H4 HID's and projectors in the head lights and LED side lights so quite a modern look and feel to the front light setup

Cheers,

Looks great mucky :) show's it's being used properly.

Really enjoying your thread - this is going to be lovely when you've finished, recaros etc are right up my street.

Maybe something for me to look at for "Albus" later. I like the loo of the double lamps on the box, wonder how that would look  or  or

One of the few easy jobs to do on an A2 3L... Rear wheel bearing.

And looking at the shoes and max'd out adjusters, it's time for new shoes.

A quick test drive to collect my boys from Nursery confirmed a nice quiet drive without a rumble rumble!

One of the small things that I noticed when putting the car through the mot was that the drivers door seems to have dropped... Not that unusual in a car that's done almost 160k miles...

But on further investigation where the hinge bolts on is cracked.

Having read the threads on this forum (thank you once again!) I have been in touch with my local Audi dealership and they're inspecting it in the new year with regard to the recall.

Here's a pic of the crank with the door hinge removed.

20171229_224707_zpsruyowy5m.jpg

It's pretty bad. The door has dropped enough that it catches the wing when opening.

If Audi don't offer to fix it, I'll replace the door.

Over the Christmas break, I managed to get a few things done.

First... the timing belt was last changed in late 2008... so it was a 'little' overdue... like 4-5 years and just 8,000 miles!!

Lots of new parts from TPS... with something like this, I prefer to use genuine parts.

20171229_104744_zps7r4rrjve.jpg

If I needed proof that it was overdue... I found it fairly quickly.

20171229_115633_zps7669bpyk.jpg

What lovely weather to be working outside in... around 3-4 °C!

20171229_121009_zpsozpcc5q2.jpg

After the removal of lots of parts... I could actually get in and look at the belt.

20171229_130427_zps0avqml98.jpg

And found evidence that the water pump had started to weep... good timing for a change!

20171229_131734_zpscspu40nh.jpg

All went back together easily and it's happy enough with new coolant etc.

While I was in there and working on it, I decided to give the wiper arm a quick lick of paint as it was looking nasty. I'll be looking for a good replacement at some point.

20171229_121028_zpsjcakxasa.jpg

Another job on the list was the constant 'clonk clonk' that is still coming from the front suspension.

The replacement drop-links arrived so I set about fitting them...

This is not my idea of fun!!

20171231_145209_zpsts3qqg8x.jpg

Still it drilled out ok and re-tapped without issue.

20171231_150952_zpsjdmlonq5.jpg

The other side was slightly easier to get out.

20171231_152927_zpsrhqmhkep.jpg

Any mechanic / technician who puts things together like this without copperslip should be fired!

All back together... guess what... it's exactly the same :(

The hunt for the clonks continues. I expect that I'll end up replacing all wearing parts but then at least it'll be good for the next 10 years etc.
