if you go down the new thermostat route i'd recommend a new one - the housing gets brittle over the years and cracks or the small pipe can break off when being fitted. when i had an FSI I bought one of these (it turned out to be original Audi part with the logo filed off), so its the proper part, no toooo expensive. They are a fiddle to fit if doing yourself but doable.
