Hi folks I'm trying to find out why my radiator fan isn't kicking in. It doesn't work when aircon set to auto or when temp shows 90 in gauge, i was wondering if its the fuse, the diagram above and in my car shows there should be a 20a fuse at position 4, but there is no fuse in positions 3 or 4 in my car FSI, and no electrical contacts in those positions either?? also where do i find the fan fuse s142, marked c in the second photo above? how do i access it? the fan starts up fine if i disconnect the temp sensor in the bottom hose. i'm pretty clueless when it comes to car electrics, so I'd appreciate basic answers if you've any ideas. many thanks

Make sure you are looking at position 4. All diagrams are for LHD vehicles and RHD are rotated. S142 is on the fuse box but not visible through the cover. You need to drop the " drivers storage compartment " the panel below the steering wheel, it is held on with a couple of Torx screws ( one hidden above the kick panel to the right of the accelerator pedal ) and spring clips along its upper edge. Be careful when you lower it as theOBDII socket and service flap release are attached to it. You can now see the whole of the fuse box. Could it be the fault is the temp sensor in the bottom hose. The fan should run at low speed with the air con on - not ECON - all the time then speed up as the engine reaches over temperature. Check fuses with a meter do not just look at them as frequently they have failed but still look intact.

oh! so, if it is marked number 4 on the diagram, that is only for LHD. in our cars, number 4 is on the left hand side of the panel, and its not numbered 4? i'll go take a look. cheers

Circled fuse on YOUR (audia2owners ) picture is fuse 4. Most diagrams you look at are for LHD i.e the middle picture above ,the chart in the lid of the box ( right picture ) is correct. Picture not upside down as you can see the fuse box lid catches at the bottom as you look at it.

hi ok thanks, i've been out to check and the fuses are as laid out in the photos above (they are not my photos, or of my car). there are a couple of exceptions which i don't understand though. my car doesn't have any fuse for the radiator fan at position 4. i'll load a photo now

position 4, no contacts? I did check the other fuses using a meter and found one was dead, but looked fine to the eye, good tip. cheers

What model and year is your car as there may be wiring differences. Worth reading this thread may be of help may not.
Do you have air con or the three rotary dials for the heater?

is a 2003 fsi with push button aircon, i tried it set to auto. i read that the fan won't come on if the aircon isn't sufficiently charged and I don't know if its charged, so that isn't conclusive. i'll try a new coolant sensor, but its starnge that there is no other listing for rad fan of the fuse box panel. mine just shows no. 4 radiator fan. I'll update once I've changed the sensor. thanks for your help

All fans run slow where air con is fitted. did you check the other thread? Worth checking the connections are good on the rear of the climate panel. Remove and refit all of the a few times, this wipes the contacts and while it is out clean out the little fan compartment making sure the fan is free to rotate. A diagnostic scan would now prove useful as it could show faulty components.

Hi, can someone confirm something for me please. My rear windscreen demist doesnt work, so I thought I would try changing the fuse. Had a look at the diagrams online and was surprised to see what I thought was 15, had a 10 amp fuse in. Just noticed the bit about it being inverted.
So I think I've actually taken out 31 and not 15?? (Which would explain why the ECU light and EML has come on!).
Have I got the numbering correct please? If so, the one I want will be third from the right, at the top?
Many thanks T

You have got me worried now, lol. I thought I pulled out fuse 39 tonight (to no avail) but never knew anything about inverted?

As you look at your fuse box, fuse 1 is at the bottom on the right hand side, and the fuses are then numbered up to 5 in that right-hand column. The next column to the left has fuse 6 at the bottom up to 10 at the top, and so on. So yes, fuse 15 is at the top of the third column.

The diagram at the top of your label shows the correct position of the fuses.

Phew, lol. I got that image online as my one didn't have the legend at the top. Was concerned because there was talk of a right hand drive car.

Thanks Steve - I shall put number 31 back in tomorrow ?
