Good morning,

I have found a 2003 LHD Audi A6 Avant Quattro 2.5 TDI Tiptronic which has triggered my interest. I was wondering whether any of you has ever had such a car and if so what your experience has been (reliability, fuel economy, any issues, etc.)

Thanks

Afternoon,

Not had the same engined car but...

We had an A6 (C5) Avant 1.9 TDI PD130 which had the same engine and gearbox as the Mk4 Golf it replaced. The MPG was better in the A6 than its lightweight cousin. Great reliable engine which is sort of where the A2 TDI engine came from (minus a cylinder).

It was great and kept it for many years. It got us to 190k miles and was running brilliantly mechanically but started to develop electrical issues. We replaced it by upgrading to a A6 (C7) Avant in 2014.

An awesome car to add miles to though.

Kind regards,

Tom

Same engine and transmission, but in a 2004 A4 Avant. Bought 2004, written off 2010. No problems, towed caravan around France every year, no overheating of engine or transmission. Joy to drive. Had it remapped, for increased torque, and fitted a stiffer rear ARB.
Should cope with the heavier A6 no probs. Get it scanned before purchase, as inlet flaps and servo motors can stick, as always, down to EGR and PCV kit.

I had a manual 52 plate allroad with the same engine from 3 years old. Great car but hefty. Engine never gave any greif, sold on original clutch at over 160k.
Usual Audi cdl aggro as it got old...

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

The one I have found has 118.000 miles and only one previous owner. It has always been serviced by Audi. It looks good for its age on the photos, but those can of course be deceptive. We currently have a RHD 2004 Volvo XC70 D5 auto, just shy of 160.000. The reason I am looking at that particular Audi is the fact that will be moving to Italy and it would save us the hassle of looking for a car over there.

If it is already UK registered, factor in the de-conversion to LHD driving as in front lights, rear fog light (unless both are illuminated?) which is a bit of a hassle.

I have factored that in. Headlights (both second hand and new - aftermarket) don't seem to be too bad. And since the car originally came from France, I'm hoping the rear foglight wiring is still there, so it shouldn't be too difficult to reverse the process - or so I'm hoping. My reasoning behind bying a UK registrated LHD car is that it will allow us to travel abroad on a UK insurance for up to 180 days which will give us ample time to do all the necessary things for exporting the car. It also means that we don't have to travel back to the UK in order to sell the RHD Volvo (although, since we will be moving to Sicily, we could try and sell it to someone from Malta).

Get the transmission fluid changed ASAP at that mileage I think.

Just remembered that a friend had an ex-demo Passat estate with the same 163bhp V6 TDI and 6 speed manual. It got through tyres at a rate being fwd, the torque just chews the treads off. 15k for the fronts was typical.
But this is a quattro! So...
the allroad wasnt much better on tyres, always on the bars at low-mid 20k, all 4 evenly worn but that was a 2 ton manual car.

if the car is cheap give it a go,but the 2.5tdi is fraught with problems..
its thirsty,poor auto gearbox,turbo problems,fuel pump,cambelt&waterpump/tensioners all pack up..
go for the 3.0tdi C6 its bulletproof i have 2 of these cars i use 1 on the racetrack and i thrash it to death and it just comes back for more..

The car is at £ 3000, so for us quite a financial risk - I hate it that you have to pay a premium for a LHD car, especially if it has a UK reg. In this case, I am actually cross, because the car was being sold on eBay (auction) through the owner (last time I checked it was at £1180 with four days to go). He then took it off and guess what, a couple of hours later it appears on a dealer's website for the above mentioned price... I think they fleeced the owner, but he probably was worried that the auction wasn't going according to his expectation. So, in my opinion the dealer got himself a bargain and is now trying to cash in on the UK reg as if he is offering it as a service to the potential customer ("all documents will be provided", "certificate of conformity", "all good to go", etc. etc. )

Will there be a problem when you re-register the car in Italy ? I presume that you'll have to do that.
Of course, there is that. The car will need to be imported. The fees and taxes are based on the actual value of the car so that should be fine. It will also need new headlight units and possibly a rear foglight.

My mate is an audi tech and reckons the 2.5 is the worst engine audi ever made so that was enough to put me off a few years ago.

I'm guessing that's why Volvo decided to move away from them with the first generation V70 and develop their now famous D5 engine.
