Do you own an A2 in either Metallic or Gloss Black?

What is your opinion on the quality of finish on Black Audis?

I had a new A3 in gloss black a while back and the finish was terrible with an orange peel effect and bad reflection to the finish. Do gloss black Audis have no clearcote, but the metallic versions do?

Is it worth paying the extra few hundred for metallic when gloss is a free option???

You could do with amending the number of options people can have on the poll - really, there should be 2 allowed, one for the preference and one for quality.

Cheers,

Mike

Out of interest, I had an 02 'new mini' in silk green (pale metallic green) - the finish and lacquer were superb, smooth and faultless. I've currently got an 02 A2 Tdi in silver, the finish is superb. My wife had a Y reg A6 Avant in a metallic grey/blue, superb finish. She changed that for an 03 A6 Avant in non metallic blue. The paint doesn't seem to hold its finish or polish and, having just changed jobs I have an A3 sportback sport in Toucan (custard!) yellow. There are definite orange peel ripples on the rear behind the side windows (is that 'c'-column?) and again, despite washing and waxing there seems very little lustre - for a 6 month old car the paint has a slight chalky feel as though it is years old and ingrained with traffic dirt. There is definite value engineering. We were going to (sorry) sell the A2 but it's such a good all rounder, more involving than the A3 and much better quality, we'll probably keep it. I have a feeling Audi are cutting back on heir cars, especially entry level A3's

I have also noticed that the paint finish on new minis is excellent. They seem to have a very smooth and highly reflective finish.

I Was talking to a guy in a body workshop recently and he reckoned that you cant get the same
finish on modern cars as you used to be able to as paints nowadays are Acrylic based
better for the enviroment and all that but he said they tend to give you a slight orange peel effect ....
