Auto dim rear mirror not working

Hi All
This has probably been covered before but i am unable to find any info on a genuine a2 rear auto dim mirror that i have fitted to my A2?(no on/off button on mirror)
I have one fitted to my a2 and it is not working(since owned).
I have taken cover off electrical connectors(near mirror) and tested 6 pin plug close to mirror.
Cables from car are:
Black/blue -12v ignition. Brown - earth. grey/green? and blue/red?
I have tried combinations of lights with car running and still no power at other cables.
There is no part number on rear mirror itself? But have found a part number on cover that i removed to view 6 pin plug. 8Do 857 593.
And the mirror is marked up with audi badge and manufactured by donnelly.
If mirror is u/s are there any direct replacements? Or would it be better to have a like for like replacement.
Thanks All in advance.

Hi Steve do you have access to elsawin (I think that's what it's called?) it should give you the wiring diagrams.

There's the following connections to the rear view mirror:

Earth, +12v, reverse light feed, interior light feed

The last two will not allow the mirror to dim if there's a control voltage from either the reverse switch or the interior light. Can't remember which way around the colours go (pretty sure that the blue/red is for the reverse switch), but I'd suggest that one of these was causing the mirror not to activate.

Hi Mike
Thanks for quick reply. Just tested mirror with door closed and interior light off "doh" and mirror works fine, although a little slow to react. Is there a specific time for it to work?
Thanks again for explaining wiring.
Steve

No specific time, but it generally gets to max dimness in around 5-10 seconds. You did cover the photoreceptor on the windscreen side with a finger?

Hi Mike
Yes covered receptor but mirror is very slow to react. Looked at a test procedure on youtube for a Vw golf and that one seems a lot quicker and darker than the one i have. Is this normal or is the mirror on it's way out? Also is there a better direct replacement upgrade?
Would prefer a mirror that you could turn on or off, there's a Q5 mirror on E**y not on much money at moment Part number 857 511 B.
Do you know what electric dim mirrors are ok to use on the A2? I know modern Audi's have a rain sensor built into the mirror assembly.
Thanks
Steve

The mirror used in the A2 is actually an A4 mirror, which is why yours works perfectly Murdi.

Due to the different mounting methods of all the newer Audi mirrors, you cannot use ones from any car after around 2005, so Q3/5/7 are out, as are all recent versions of the A models.

Cheers,

Mike
