Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

After many months of testing and fine tuning the installation method I am now ready to offer an Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror as a 'self fit' kit

You get the Auto Dimming Mirror (I currently have grey and black available)
A2 windscreen adaptor stem
Trim panel (so no unsightly cable from mirror to head lining)
Wiring loom

The mirror itself is a genuine VAG mirror (but not from the A2), It as the front and rear light sensors as per the original factory option for the A2, plus it has an on/off button which the original A2 Auto Dimming mirror did not.
The wiring is really simple, in its simplest form you only need two wires, earth and ignition live. A third wire can be added to stop the mirror dimming when in reverse gear but is optional (it needs a wire running from the rear light cluster to the mirror which is a faff to do)

The kit is £100 + P&P (£5 to the UK)
I'm unsure what demand will be, but I have two black and two grey mirrors available now. I have a follow on supply of mirrors, but will need to source more A2 windscreen stems as these need to be machined to accept the larger ball fitting of the Auto Dimming mirror.

The first 4 are available on a first come first served basis, but I will endeavour to satisfy further demand as quickly as practical.

Hi, I already have an auto dimming mirror on the petrol I just bought. But the liquid has all dropped in the glass.

Can these fit onto the existing mount / connection or is it not such a straightforward plug and play?

Cheers,

I have the same issue. Anyone have a working dimming mirror for sale or know of any VAG compatible alternatives that link on to the same wiring?

The audi a4 mirror fits the same housing and also has the on off switch incorperated,i have fitted one in my own car and works perfect

Not 100% sure if the mirror I offer will fit onto the existing mirror stem but to be honest it’s neither here nor there as changing the stem is a 10 second job (twist through 90 deg and it pops off the screen)
The electrical connector may also need changing but there is only 2 wires needed 12 v ign live and earth both of which will be present on the original mirror connector
I’m on holiday atm but from memory I have one black mirror and several grey ones
They all have the on off button which the A2 mirror never had and are all new ‘old stock’ vag mirrors
They come with the head lining to mirror stalk trip panel which makes the fitting look very oem

Hi DarkHorse, which A4 version please?
I'm guessing you get 12 volts from the light cluster?

Mac.

Hi plasticmac

Im not a darkhorse ha ha........But the one i used was from the Audi a4 b6 version the fixings and electric plug is the same as the a2 set up would be,yes power can be taken from the interior light

Thanks

Pete,
Sorry for the mistaken ID! Thanks for the info. Will look for B6 bits.

I've purchased this : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-B7-Sline-Beige-Grey-Auto-Dimm-Rear-View-Mirror/163795807988
I'm assuming that it's suitable? By asking that, I'm thinking that the mounting boss secured to the windscreen is universal, so I'd just twist-off my existing mirror and then replace it with this auto-dimming mirror? Obviously a bit of wiring to do, but an improvement ....

David

Dave,
Unless you have an existing A2 auto dimming mirror then certainly NOT able to use the A2 windscreen stem
On the auto dimming mirrors there is a wiring loom which is about 5mm dia this gets to the mirror is a hole drilled axially through the mirror stem
As such the std mirror stem would have little I’d the ball left hence the ball dia on the auto dimming mirror is increased to something around 18mm dia
For this reason the std mirror stalk cannot be used
Also there is more weight in the auto dimming mirror meaning that more clamping force is needed to hold it in its set position hence the larger dia ball

Cheers and sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Paul

Paul,
Thanks for your reply. Firstly, others members seem to have been able to use Audi A4 dimming mirrors. (Type B6 has been mentioned in a few threads}. In fact, this very thread makes mention of that type. Now what I was asking is not regarding the stem but how the stem attaches to the boss which is glued to the windscreen? The Forum seems to have been indicating that mirrors from the Audi A4 attach in a similar way to the boss of the A2. i.e., the bosses are identical. Have I got that wrong? Now if that was not the case, then I'd have to see if it's possible to cut the two stems and from the parts to have fabricated a unique stem to do the job? I don't fail at much in life, and if I hear the words "it can't be done", then that's the kind of challenge that really inspires me! :) I could "Dremmel-out" material for the electrical components and do a good job of any restructuring of the stem. I feel that you're the expert in this field, so I'll respect and appreciate any input that you can provide to help in my latest project.

David

I’ve never tried the a4 mirror stem myself but when I was looking at auto dimming mirrors some two years ago I did not find any ygg hg at would for the A2 stem more find bc a stem that fits the A2 windscreen
So I made a hybrid stem with the glass mount from the A2 and the mirror mount from the one that matched my supply of auto dimming mirrors
This hybrid stem is quits a work of art and needs some intricate machining which is beyond what can be done with a dremmel
However if the A4 stem fits the A2 windscreen then happy days as this removes a major part of the work then I had
Best of luck and keep us all posted
Cheers Paul

I've studied videos on u tube and photos from Ebay listings, I don't think that the bosses ARE compatible. However, I'm thinking that the internal locating/clamping plate can be changed over from the Audi A2 to the A4. Interesting! ... and that's without having both to hand! As I've mentioned, I do so like a challenge! Just one other point to raise ..... I can see that there are FOUR wires coming from the mirror? What's that all about? I thought that they have three and that one can be left unconnected ....

David

There are 6 wires in total
Earth
Ignore live
Interior light
Reversing light
Left hand door mirror dim
Right hand door mirror dim

But you only need the first two to make it work

I have the first 4 wires in but that is just me
The 18m ball is needed due to the extra weight of the auto dimming mirror so do not try to use the A2’s small ball as it’s not up to the job with the extra weight and less contact area due to wiring loom

Thanks, Paul. for the wiring low-down. No. I'm going to use the A4 mirror as received. The only modification is that the internal clamping ring will need to be changed so that it then locates, with a clockwise turn, onto the A2 boss which is glued onto the windscreen. I hope that has made it clearer as to what I'll have to do ..... It does look to be a very good condition mirror and even if it didn't work :) , then it's at least the right colour for my interior! (the existing mirror is black)

David

Ok David
I have no idea how different the step to windscreen mount is on the A4 as against the A2
Best of luck

That mirror won't fit onto the A2 standard mirror fitting as that A4 mirror is designed to sit over the rain and headlight sensor which has a completely different fitting on the windscreen

I did come to that same conclusion but I've got a few "tricks up my sleeve", so I'll assess things after it's delivered. They'll accept a return up to 30 days, anyway. I'm still confident that I'll get this to fit .... watch this space! LOL!
