Auto Headlight Install (Bluetooth version)

You do not need to do this, and you should not as you damage the knob.

Instead you remove some of the excess plastic at the back of the fascia so you can push the knob through the fascia (this will not be visible damage)

Each to their own. I didn’t want to cut or damage anything.
So far 12 fitted and no knob damage (to me or the car).
So that is another option. Thanks

So this is a safe way to rmove the switch so it can go through a stock headlamp fascia? Does it look like its been taken apart once it goes back on? Does it need glued?

No glue no damage and fits perfect.

this is it in situ after it has been put back on.

But the other option works too, I have a phobia about cutting into standard parts so I prefer this way. But it is up to whoever is fitting it.

Ok, in your PDF the knob seems to have a small damage where you pushed/pryed it apart.

I would say it is less risk removing some of the excess plastic from the back of the fascia. That does not damage anything neither will be visible if you do it at «12o’clock»

Still prefer this new switch fascia and a chrome ring.

One thing to note with all these Auto light switches is that if you leave them on Auto there is a small current drain. To prevent the battery going flat with non use just make sure you turn the switch to OFF as it then draws no current.

Does the bluetooth version operate as a modern DRL; ie front parking lights on only during daytime or is also rear lights on at day?

2 further points. The little clips that secure the old switch to the fascia are REALLY fragile and great care must be taken when removing the switch from these locations. The old switch will pass through the fascia if you turn to sidelights and pull out to rear fogs. This gives enough room to press on the top of the knob to start it through the fascia once it is out the switch then pivots around the bottom of the knob and is free. Refit is reverse.

No it does not operate as modern DRL but there is the DRL pin fitted to the rear of the switch.

That was a tiny sliver of black plastic, not damage to the switch. As you can see in the post install picture it is NOT damaged.
I am not picking holes in your method, but you seem to be saying that my method (that I have used in more than 12 installs is wrong. I agreed several times that your method is another option. So please don’t think that I am contradicting you.
I also said that whoever fits one can choose whatever option they prefer.

I was trying to help. It took me hours to do that for no benefit to me.
If there was an error I would welcome input. In fact I did welcome your input but you seem convinced that I am wrong.

Thanks for the tips and yes. The four clips are very fragile. By the way, you mean turn to Headlights to pull out to the fog position. That allows the old one out easy enough. (It is covered in the guide already)

Great write up Steve B. Your time is appreciated. Does the latest batch of switches still have rubbish Chenglish "instructions"?

Thank you!

No, worse still there are no instructions included at all, not even the name of the app or the passcode for the BT pairing!!!

You don’t need those Chenglish instructions for the settings because the phone app is a huge improvement.

As audifan says, but there is at least the option to put the settings to maximum for the sidelights, so they come on all of the time so that would help anyone who used the sidelight feed to drive the DRLs perhaps?

No, I am just writing very direct as a Norwegian not having the UK courtesy way of writing hehe

I have worked in Norway many times.
perhaps I am being over-sensitive after doing the document.
Thanks for the input.

Being direct (Norwegian?) I look forward to your next / first help document. ???

Bingo, mine is now fitted, many many thanks for the write up Steve, gave me the confidence to just go for it...
I've used your settings, had to borrow my neighbours iPhone to do it though...being old I don't like iPhones!!!!!
Looking forward for it to go dark sk I can try them now!!!!

Perhaps it is time for one of the admins to make this a sticky or transfer it into the "how tos"

Great write up as usual @Birchall.

I can also state that I purchased the same Bluetooth Automatic Headlight Switch a couple of years ago. It was purchased from the same seller that Steve has mentioned and it DOES have the correct front/rear fog light illumination.

See picture here, scroll down to post #4 and you’ll see the correct illumination along with the Golf Mk4 chrome ring fitted.

If anyone was finding it difficult to find someone with a Dremel I could help if you were able to send me your fascia and chrome ring. It’s 30 minutes work with the correct attachment on the Dremel.

Kind regards,

Tom
