Autocar New V. Old Test

Mike, watch out your gearbox is feeling a little loose in its old age but your leather seats are fine!!

Chris

Ha! Yes, made me laugh that bit about the sloppy gearchange! Still, Vicky was clutching at straws and had to criticise Tank in some way!!!

As to the Polo, well although the paper numbers show that it's more economical, as was pointed out, in the real world, they're both the same.

It is a well balanced article and shows that the A2 is still the small car to beat, bar none. Hopefully it's firmed up the residuals again too.

Phil: How I keep the sills so shiney and free of chips? Simple, have them resprayed 6 months before a photoshoot!!!

Cheers,

Mike

It was a very good article and showed how even ten years on the a2 is still the best!! i went to have a look at the polo in detail and i know can agree with what you said, the interior is a league away from the a2 and it is not much fun to drive either so i am hanging on for a new a2 when it eventually comes out!

Chris

Told the Mrs. it was out this week and she brought me the Auto Express home yesterday! Awww - didn't have the heart to say it was the wrong one - still, its an entertaining read and there's a good wee article about the Audi 500 vs. the A1, and I'll pick up Autocar later :D

Enjoyed the article, congrats Skipton, going to have to watch out for the smug cloud coming out my A2...

Was interested that the MPG figures for the Polo were taken from the inboard computer - how reliable is that? I've read on here the A2's DIS isn't always accurate.

Famales and their attention to detail! Eh?

"...even normal SEs came with leather..." And the best one "The rear footwells are recessed to allow the seats to be lower and therefore allow adults to sit more comfortably..." Urgh. The whole point is that the seat base is higher from the floor thus your ankles are not around your face as on other cars.

I also would like to see how you stand under the A2's rear hatch to protect you from the rain?!?! The hinges are way too far back in the body. If you have a station wagon type car like a Land Rover Discovery you have the hinges nearer the bumper and you can in fact stand under the hatch. But in the A2? Never.

But a great review and a smashing final summary paragraph. :) What a car the A2 still is!

Johann, same thoughts I had when reading it. Massive mistake to say SE have leather - implying leather seats. Leather steering wheels in SE, yes, not seats! The rear hatch too, a Golf/Polo where the hinge is at the tail of the car. The A2's hatch can barely cover my back when I need to load stuff in the boot.

The final line in the article is brilliant though. 20th centry design for the 21st centry. Audi should take note.

Mistakes happen all the time. Somebody who is familiar with the A2 should have approved it before it went to the printers though. Maybe the next issue can sort things out...

1.2 v 1.2 ?

If they want a re-match then I'm happy to lend A2 1.2 TDI - presently averaging 85mpg.

Best

Great to see the A2 getting such good coverage even now.

I did have a little chuckle at the pic of Tank's interior with the caption 'This A2 is unusually well equipped'... no kidding! ;)

Very complimentary article about the A2 and Tank is looking great! Agree with the comments about the final paragraph. Praise indeed. Maybe there'll be a few more people trawling the classifieds shortly!

Apparently they also think Mike has "205/15 R16 (non-standard) tyres. With a 15 section sidewall it certainly would be non-standard, the ride would be like wooden cartwheels.

I picked up on all the same comments too.

Agree with Lukas, a genuine comparrison between the Polo Bluebowelmotion and A2 1.2TDI should put it to bed!

That would have been too cruel!

Isn't this really A1 vs. A2?

What is interesting is a comparison between the Polo BM and the Lupo 3L. The latter has comparable performance, is technically much more advanced, about 60% of the price, 12% more fuel efficient and 11 years older!

Polo Bluemotion VS Audi A2 3L

It was great to see the A2 winning the Autocar test particularly as this is a general motoring magazine and is widely read not just by VW and Audi enthusiasts.
Although Audi appear to have scored an own goal by suggesting Autocar compare a standard Polo Bluemotion with Mike's well equipped A2. Why purchase a new Polo or A1?

It is just a pity the A2 3L was not mentioned. I have just travelled over 1000 km on 3/4s of a tank of diesel (full tank 34l). The MFA states the average is 2.4 l/100km and the remaining range is 420 km. Taking into account a 2% odometer error and a 6-8% MFA error this equates to approximately 2.6 l/100km or 108 mpg. When I fill the tank in the next week or so it will be interesting to check the actual consumption. The best that I have achieved so far is 105 mpg with an average of about 98mpg over the last 50,000 km.
I wonder could a test be arranged to compare the consumption of the Polo Bluemotion and the A2 3L? The A2 was ten years ahead of its time.

I guess they would not want to compare a a2 3L aganst a polo blue motion.

The A2 would win hands down:D

I haven't seen the article yet, Is it still available? Or it would make a nice ending to this post if it were scanned in, and available for years to come!
