Aux/fan belt tensioner 1.4tdi 75

I changed the fan belt tensioner a few months back as the old one was rattling its tits off.
Now it’s started to rattle again!
I did replace with a genuine Audi one and was told by my brother, who is a mechanic that it would do the same as was pointless in replacing it as he had the same problem on a TT...
My question is why does it do this? Is there anything else I should change at the same time when I do this job again?
Have recently done the timing belt, full kit.
Any input is muchly appreciated

You will probably find that it's not the auxiliary belt tensioner but the alternator pulley as was the case with mine.

If it hasn't been replaced my advice would be to replace it ASAP as mine actually sheared and flew off whilst investigating the 'rattle' in the garage.

I replaced the tensioner and belt at the same time and also had the alternator fully reconditioned too although there was nothing wrong with it, just so it was the complete job and hopefully wouldn't need to go there again in the future.

Genuine pulley is made by INA BTW and costs around £25 ?

Could you try and upload a video of your rattle as i would be interested (and others) to relate if it is the same as mine...

What could the fault be with the alternator pulley?
It just wears out and eventually collapses and shears off as in my case, the same as the tensioner pulley does.

If you think how many revolutions it makes over 17 years of use it's no surprise really and does pretty well to last that long.

Here's what mine looked like when it flew off?

Well I have to say what a difference with my car after changing the alternator pulley!
Only cost £30 for an ‘original’ one from GSF and to say it has made a difference would be an understatement!
There didn’t look or feel like there was anything wrong with the old one when I removed the belt but changed it anyway as for £30 it was worth a punt.
The car no longer shakes or vibrates and is genuinely 100% quieter!
Thanks for the advice guys ?

Really glad you managed to change it before it failed and I noticed how much quieter it seemed after changing mine too.
Would really recommend everyone change theirs if it hasn't been done ?

Good point! They're noisy AF and Alison's was on it's way out big time.

Same mode of failure mentioned above; Alternator Pulley Clutch U\S, etc.

This was all replaced at the same time as the Cambelt; 'Pump; Tensioners and the Oil Pump\Balance Shaft Drive Chain and Tensioners.

An expensive day out, but we'll worth it as Alison is so much quieter! ? ? ? ? ? ?
