Hi,

I wonder if anybody can help. We’ve got an A2 1.6SE and were expecting our first baby shortly.

I’ve checked and I don’t appear to have any means of turning off the front passenger air bag. Is this something my dealer can do for me fairly easily? Or is it possible to buy rear facing baby seats that will fit in the back seat?

Thanks if anyone has any info.

Scott

Hi Scott,

Your dealer should be able to disable the airbag on request. I don't know if they would be able to retrofit a key switch to enable you to switch it on and off at will, though and the cost may be prohibitive anyway.

Rear-facing seats are just fine in the back - although the legroom for the front passenger will be reduced as you have to move the seat forward somewhat. The only thing to be wary of is ensuring that the seat belt is sufficiently long to fit around the car seat. Our Group 0 seat is one of those with a separate base which seems to make a long belt necessary - we couldn't even get it in my mother's Golf.

If you have a look at http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/uk29.htm you can see the key switch which is available as a cost option from new - and evidence that you can get rear-facing car seats into the back :)

Hope this helps...

Dealer should be able to disable front airbag on request - I imagine you will have to sign a disclaimer though.

When we had our baby (Feb 03) we used those carry seats and had no problems fitting it in the front or back (we got the ISOFIX option so can manually turn off the airbag when used in the front).

She has now graduated to a front facing seat and we have no problems with room either (luckily ISOFIX makes it very easy to move the seat).

Thanks ak & msmorley, I think I'll just go for a rear facing seat in the back, no sense paying the dealer to disable it if I dont need to.

The useful key-thing cannot be dealer fitted - it has to be a factory option - however your dealer should be able to disable the passenger airbag only through the software. You need to sign a disclaimer from Audi to say you agree to it being disabled - it takes about an hour and my local dealer quoted £87 to have it done. I am in the same boat - baby due December 21st and the A2 is a replacement for a mini cooper. We are getting it done free of charge by the dealer we are picking the car up from.

Hoep this helps - and good luck with your forthcoming "arrival"!

Just my 2p's worth Scottie - I now have a 4 yr old and we're on our 3rd car seat with him. There is a opinion among all the 'car seat experts' I've found (eg retailers who sell nothing but child seats) that even de-activated airbags are a risk to front mounted rear-facing seats, as the airbag is still there and could go off anyway if an accident happened. Their only advice was to have the bag removed totally. They even advised me not to put the front-facing seats in the front of the car with an airbag as the seats place them that much closer to the bag (higher up and typically with both legs sticking out in front at airbag height) that they would take a major impact in the case of an accident - particularly on the legs.

Also, make sure you see a specialist retailer who sees the seat in your car(s) as many seatbelt buckles do not work safely with many seat designs. It's hard to explain without looking at a seat, but no part of the plastic buckle must touch the seat itself when fully tighted - many buckles are mounted on short extenders that make them easier to reach but it means that when they are pulled tight, the plastic buckle pushes on the seat, and for reasons i cant remember, this is not safe. My several Vauxhalls and Honda all had this problem. Its a simple job to fit a new buckle and our local centre charges only a few £'s for the buckle and fits it for free with any seat purchased. A small price for absolute safety for your new child.

Good luck with the new arrival.

we just had twins so we went through the whole baby seat stuff...

everybody has told us that the safest place for babies/kids is in the BACK seat.

we have 2 rearward facing baby seats in the back seat (bench seat) and we have plenty of room in the front.

from what i understand the 0-6 month or basically the newborn seats are non isofix so you have to use the seatbelts anyway...

the next stage of baby seats are isofix and the rear bench seat has the isofix mounts as standard....

congrats on the new baby!!!
