Was here 8 or 9 years ago when I owned a 1.4SE that I’d searched hard for and bought from a main dealer. After several Audi’s and VW’s later (2 B4 Coupes and Golf V5 Estate) and currently ‘pootling’ about in a 3.2 TT Roadster the desire for an A2 has risen to the surface again...and the need for something more suitable for ferrying 3 kids around when I don’t want to use the family wagon!
Currently searching for a 5 seater, preferably with 3 proper belts!

Welcome back.

During your absence the access to the forum Marketplace has recently changed. New members now have to pay a one off £2 fee to see it. Click on your user name in the main menu and click 'Account upgrades' .......

There is a five seater going at the moment.

Might be more but they are rare, even more so with 3 belt rear bench seat.

You could put a post in Wanted, (where this thread should really be but no big deal).

Already paid up ?

Actually, many would argue for ferrying the kids around a 1.4 petrol should be the choice. - Andy

That and my daily ‘commute’ of 25 miles don’t dictate I need a diesel...after all I’m doing it at around 26mpg at the moment ?

I’ve read several threads on here regarding higher mileage A2’s and I appreciate that it is maintenance and care that is of more
Importance than age or mileage.
I’ve seen a car that ticks most of my wish list:
2004 1.6FSi
150,000 miles
Years MOT with no advisories
5 Audi services up to 75k miles then yearly with independents
Maintenance including new ignition coils, intake manifold rebuild with new actuator and flaps and other items like several disc/pad tyre replacements that suggest the car has been looked after rather than abused.

What’s the feelings over something like this rather than another A2 a with half as many miles but isn’t the model/colour/spec that I would prefer?!

Thanks
Rob

Personally, my feeling is only you can make this call. Read up on the forum and go from there.

I too am a newcomer in a similar situation (ie. In the market for my first A2).

Get the right engine for you, and aircon / OSS or not according to your preference. These things either can't be retrofitted, or they can't be done easily enough to be worth it unless you really want to. Whatever it is, you want it with as good condition and history as you can get. As long as the mileage isn't too high, these are more important.

Hopefully you can find the right car in a colour scheme you like, but you'll find the most choice if you like silver exteriors and black interiors. After that, any other spec items it doesn't have can be bought and retrofitted - @timmus is the resident expert in that field.

The one you've mentioned sounds like the silver one near Slough with the grey accents and wheels, on Facebook. It's been commented on in the Spotted section in our Marketplace - here and here.

This brings us back to the question of what's too high mileage? 150k+ is fine on a diesel - they'll do double that if really looked after - and there are 1.4s known over 200k. But it really could be close to the end for an FSI.

If you really want that one, you might consider as a side project also trying to find a low-mileage engine in a crashed car (i.e. hasn't been scrapped for head gasket/death pipe failure). Renew its entire cooling system pipes and housings as they will all be going brittle, as well as the usual cambelt/waterpump. Then you've got it ready if/when the 150k one lets go, from which you can transfer over the inlet manifold and other bits that have been replaced.

But talk in any case @A2Steve about the ProBoost remapped ECU, which negates all of the long-term causes of FSI problems with the flaps and cooling system, keeping these replaced components closer to 'as-new'..

Knew I should have kept 1.4SE AJ02 ***...just checked MOT history and looks to be still going strong at 160k miles...

Ref this thread - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/mk1-audi-tt-opinions.43021/post-393324 there are a few members considering the TT as a 'second' car so I'm sure there would be lots of interest in your experiences of life with the 3.2 Roadster

Cheers Spike
