Well after £1350 or so of parts and work my A2 is now MOTd and back in the game.

New wishbones (forged), drop links, front springs, front struts, top mount bearings, ARB bushings and brake disks. At the rear a new hand brake cable and new brake shoes (they had broken and started to disintegrate - a bit of cleaning was needed) and all new brake springs (hold down kit). A newly welded flexy section in the exhaust and all done.

Everything seems fine except I was getting some limping and ABS shenanigans which I think were due to 185/50 16s on the front and 205/55 16s on the back (swapped back now).

Garage seemed really decent and were friendly and open. Showed me the bits they took off so I understand now how much my previous garage weren’t doing. Carmasters in Baillieston.

On a lighter note - after the issues with rubbing and the incessant nagging from family I think I’m going to save up and get some Vredstein Quatrack 5 tyres - 205/45 16s. Standard height and done. Expensive though...

a lot of money, but also a lot of work done that will not need doing again in the near to middle future

Thanks guys. They showed me the list of items needed and discussed the price of each before ordering or charging me a bean. I added a second spring and the shocks because it seemed silly to pull it apart and not replace these at the same time.

Carmasters seemed really good and I’ll be going back (hopefully not soon though).

Amusingly I had asked my previous garage to examine the top mount bearings about a year ago because I thought they were seized. Reply was ‘they are fine’ and a few hours of labour billed. Carmasters kept the ones they took off to show me - one collapsed into two parts when they undid it and the other was close. All the bearings had escaped on one and half had collapsed on the other. Not particularly ‘fine’ really.

Car feels really tight and responsive. No more clunks or thunks on bumps. Steering is solid and light. A very nice driving experience really.

One of the mechanics at Carmasters has a Silver 2002 1.4 petrol VW Polo with exactly the same mark 1 TT 7 spoke alloys as mine! Weird coincidence! So he was very familiar with the set up and we had a wee chat about the wonderful cars.

His had only done 60,000 miles - a wee baby!
