does anyone know if replacement of this is doable with engine in car or out and any special tools required for tensioner , will need to investigate further but sounds to me like my a2 has a slight rattle (sounds like a timing chain rattle )so convinced this is the cause , any feed back would be appreciated

thanks steve very usefull and reading between the lines its possible with engine in car , but think I will require to use a ramp as don't fancy it on my back lol

Does anyone know the part nos. for the chain and tensioner? Or, for that matter, their current price?

Axle stands are fine may allow better access than four post ramp, two post lift ideally
You do need a bit of height to use the long lever crank tool freely tho so probably high lift trolley jack
If u can do a timing belt then additionally u require
M14 spline tool for balance shaft bolt if swapping gears
19mm bi hex socket for crank bolt
Protective sleeve over crank shaft is also recommended if front crank seal is a teflon version

Hi

Just done one on an ATL, engine in car, no split link , front seal casing comes off, to allow access
Special tool for crank pulley

What is the difference between a 32266 and a 43667 please? Looking at the pictures on Febi Bilstien's web site and eBay, 43667 appears the same as 32266 but with one extra sprocket:

Thanks

43667 also contains the crank sprocket which you may not need if doing a chain and tensioner change as a precaution

That’s what I thought, although I didn’t know the exact purpose for the extra item. So why do you pay less for more?

That I dont know, stock levels ?

You can source chain alone cheaper but was happier to change the lot while there as cant be certain if chain stretch is the only reason for them failing

I agree, with the amount of work involved I wanted to only do this once.

43667 on order, let’s see what turns up.

It does indeed look like if you pay less you get more:

Not sure about fitting this though:

It looks like VAG branding has been removed quite aggressively. The grinding can be felt in the chain and it is too close to the bottom of the dip between two teeth:
